Trump Says Drug Companies To Announce 'Massive' Price Cuts Soon

President Donald Trump on Wednesday said he expects major drug companies to slash prices on their products in two weeks, but did not provide details on which companies would do so or how such reductions would be made.

Health care lobbyists in Washington said they were caught by surprise and had no idea what Trump was talking about.
“You’re going to have some big news. I think we’re going to have some of the big drug companies in two weeks said they’re going to announce, because of what we did, they’re going to announce voluntary massive drops in prices,” Trump said at a signing ceremony for a new law making it easier for seriously ill people to try experimental treatments.
A Health and Human Services Department (HHS) spokeswoman said the agency had nothing else to share on Trump’s comments because it didn’t want to get ahead of any announcements.

Earlier this month, Trump unveiled the administration’s plan to lower prescription drug prices, largely through regulatory authority, calling it “the most sweeping action in history” to reduce the cost of medicines for consumers.
But healthcare stocks rose as it became clear his administration avoided aggressive direct measures to cut prices.
HHS has yet to issue any new regulations or pilot programs to lower drug prices based on the new plan.
The NYSE Arca Pharmaceutical Index .DRG, comprised of major drugmakers, fell about a quarter of a percent just after Trump’s comments on Wednesday. But it steadily recovered and closed up 1.6 percent, while the broader S&P 500 Index closed up 1.3 percent.
It is exceedingly rare for drug companies to lower prices prior to facing competition from cheap generics.
Amid increased public and Congressional criticism over high drug prices, some companies pledged to voluntarily limit annual price increases to less than 10 percent. Previously, many drugmakers typically raised prices on prescription medicines twice a year, adding up to well over 10 percent.
As public pressure mounted, drug companies have blamed middlemen, including pharmacy benefit managers (PBMs) and health insurers, for not passing discounts and rebates they demand off high list prices to consumers.
PBMs and insurers have said they are part of the solution for lowering costs and blame pricing on drugmakers.
Trump campaigned on lowering drug prices and has said that pharmaceutical companies were “getting away with murder,” but has since backed off that rhetoric.
PhRMA and BIO, the major lobby groups for the pharmaceutical and biotechnology industries, did not respond to requests for comment on Trump’s statement. Several drugmakers contacted by Reuters did not return calls seeking comment.

Egyptian FA Expect Liverpool Star To Be Fit For World Cup

Egyptian and Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah will be fit to feature in the World Cup group stages, according to the Egyptian Football Association.
The forward looked unlikely to play any part in the summer tournament after sustaining a shoulder injury tangling with Sergio Ramos in the first half of Liverpool’s 3-1 defeat against Real Madrid in the Champions League final on Saturday night before leaving the field in tears.
The forward arrived in Valencia on Tuesday for treatment on his damaged shoulder and has been assessed by Egyptian national team doctors.
Egypt’s opening World Cup match takes place on 15 June against Uruguay , with their second against the hosts Russia coming four days later.
Should Salah not return in time for either of those games, he could still appear in Egypt’s final group match against Saudi Arabia on 25 June.

Serena Williams Shared Motivational Message As She Launched Her Own Fashion Line

Tennis player and mother of one, Serena Williams launched her online shop after dreaming of pursuing a fashion career since her teenage years.
According to Serena,  she was discouraged by most and asked to face tennis squarely. But she had to find a way to make both work together.

After 15 years of trying and having people in fashion tell her "no", her dream has finally come true and she shared a message of encouragement on Instagram.
She wrote:
They say life is about timing. I learned this lesson at age 18, when I chose to play a light tennis schedule because I wanted to go to fashion school. Some criticized my decision, but I knew I had two loves--tennis and fashion--and had to find a way to make them coexist. After 15 years of false starts, and people in fashion telling me "no," it only only drove me to work harder. As a result, I discovered what it meant to invest in myself, and I allowed that belief in myself to drive me to reach my dream.
Today, I am proud to launch @serena , my own online shop. Never stop believing in yourself, you're worth it. #BeSeenBeHeard

75-Year-Old Retiree Suffers Stroke Over 15 Years’ Unpaid Pensions

A retiree from the Federal Ministry of Works and Housing, Mr. Gabriel Olofinlua, has been checking newspapers for the past 15 years, expecting to see information on his pension.

It was learnt that the Ikere-Ekiti, Ekiti State  indigene’s hope had been dashed despite going for verification exercises in Lagos and Abuja many times.

His wife, Mrs. Ayotunde Olofinlua, told our correspondent that her husband suddenly slumped into depression and suffered  a stroke in February 2010, adding that despite efforts by the family, he had yet to recover.

She explained that the 75-year-old underwent physiotherapy at the Gbagada General Hospital for two years after which he was discharged with some improvements in his movement and speech.

She said after the discharge, the family had continued to spend N30,000 on drugs every month to keep him stable.

Ayotunde said the family believed the septuagenarian might not recover fully until he got his pensions.

She said, “He worked with the Federal Ministry of Works and Housing and retired in 2003 at the age of 60. He retired at level 14 and was paid his gratuity about three years later.

“Since then, they had refused to  pay him his pensions. Before he was sick, he went to Abuja twice and was told to hold on and that they were working on the pension of other people and they would soon get to his turn.

“By 2010, he suffered a stroke and could not go anywhere again. Some people advised us to get a lawyer or somebody in the ministry to help him follow it up.

“We got one of his friends in the ministry. Unfortunately, the man died and we could not get anybody again.

“One of our relatives working in a law firm in Abuja assisted us to follow it up to a certain stage. She later said the pension office said he should wait for another verification exercise and that he would be paid. That was in 2017. We waited and didn’t hear anything.”

She said a family friend later hinted them that the pension office had opened a complaint bureau at the Tafawa Balewa Square, Onikan.

Ayotunde said the family took the retiree to the place and was told that the matter was being handled.

“We were given the names of two people, including one Alhaji Dogo, whom we were told were in charge. We started calling Alhaji Dogo for updates. The last thing he told us was that the case was in the auditor-general’s office. He said after an audit, my husband would be paid.  This has been the story all along.

“Our children have spent a lot of money on his treatment. Before now, he could not talk or walk. Although his condition appeared to have improved a little, his hands are paralysed. His words are not clear. The money the children are spending on his treatment is not bearing fruit because his mind appears to be on the pension, which he sees as his entitlement.

“We spend N30,000 on drugs every month. Despite his condition, he subscribes to The PUNCH Newspaper every week, hoping to see information on his pension in the papers. We believe he cannot fully recover until he gets his benefits.”

Our correspondent was shown a copy of Gabriel’s retirement letter, dated May 21, 2003 and signed by one Mrs. E.A. Sadare.

The letter showed that he retired as an Assistant Chief Superintendent of Works.

“With reference to your application dated March 21, 2003, I am directed to inform you that your retirement from the federal public service has been accepted with effect from June 22, 2003 when you would have put in 35 years meritorious service.

“You will liaise with the pension section of the ministry in rooms 126/128, where all documents for your benefits would be processed without any delay,” the letter stated in part.

He was issued a pensioner’s verification acknowledgement form by the Pension Transitional Arrangement Directorate, with number LAG/PF/011/11352.

The form showed that Gabriel submitted scanned copies of some documents.

Efforts to speak to Alhaji Dogo, who claimed that the victim’s case was before the auditor-general, proved abortive, as his telephone line rang out several times.

A senior official of PTAD, who did not want to be named, asked our correspondent to write a letter to the agency on the matter.

“If you need to get a formal statement on this particular pensioner you will need to write to PTAD and we will respond,” the official said.

Airbus Says Needs Time To Study U.S. Decision On Iran

European planemaker Airbus will study U.S. President Donald Trump’s decision to pull out of the Iran nuclear accord before responding, the company said on Tuesday, adding that this would take some time.

IranAir has ordered 200 passenger aircraft worth $38.3 billion at list prices, including 100 from Airbus, 80 from Boeing and 20 from Franco-Italian turboprop maker ATR.

All the deals are dependent on U.S. licenses because of the heavy use of U.S. parts in commercial planes.

“We’re carefully analyzing the announcement and will be evaluating next steps consistent with our internal policies and in full compliance with sanctions and export control regulations,” Airbus communications chief Rainer Ohler said.

“This will take some time,” he added.

Ebola Re-enforce, Killed 17 People In Northern Congo

Seventeen people in northwest Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) have died from the deadly virus, Ebola, the health ministry has said, describing the fresh outbreak as a "public health emergency with international impact."

"Twenty-one cases of fever with haemorrhagic indications and 17 deaths" have been recorded in Equateur province, it said, citing a notification to the ministry as of May 3.

Congo’s  health ministry on Tuesday described the fresh outbreak as a “public health emergency with international impact. Twenty-one cases of fever with haemorrhagic indications and 17 deaths” have been recorded in Equateur province, it said.

This is Congo's ninth known outbreak of Ebola since 1976, when the deadly viral disease was first identified in then-Zaire by a Belgian-led team. In Geneva, the World Health Organization (WHO) said lab tests in the DRC confirmed the presence of Ebola virus in two out of five samples collected from patients.

“WHO is working closely with the government of the DRC to rapidly scale up its operations and mobilize health partners, using the model of a successful response to a similar… outbreak in 2017,” it said in a statement.

It said it had released $1 million (840,000 euros) from an emergency contingency fund, set up a coordination group and deployed more than 50 experts to work with the DRC government and health agencies. All the cases were reported from a clinic at Ilkoko Iponge, located about 30 kilometres (20 miles) from Bikoro, where treatment capacities are limited, the WHO said.

A team of experts from the WHO, Doctors without Borders (DRC) and Equateur province travelled to Bikoro on Tuesday to beef up coordination and carry out investigations, it said.

The worst-ever Ebola outbreak started in December 2013 in southern Guinea before spreading to two neighbouring west African countries, Liberia and Sierra Leone. That outbreak killed more than 11,300 people out of nearly 29,000 registered cases, according to WHO estimates, although the real figure is thought to be significantly higher.

There is no current vaccine to prevent Ebola or licensed treatment for it, although a range of experimental drugs are in development. Early care with rehydration may boost the chance of survival.

Is This Right? Church Bans Members That Do Not Have PVC From Worship

Shocked as Pastor of the Flock of Christ Mission, Warri, Delta State, Bishop Simeon Okah, has announced that henceforth, any member of his church that has not obtained his Permanent Voters’ Card, PVC, “would not be allowed to worship.”

Pastor Okah is also The South-South Vice President of the Pentecostal Fellowship of Nigeria, PFN, and he made the statement while speaking with newsmen on Saturday in Warri, Delta State

He said gone were the days when Christians see politics as sin.

He said:-

“From Thursday, any member of my church who does not have his or her voter’s card would not enter this house (Church). By the grace of God, I am the one God used in founding the Flock of Christ Mission.”

He also faulted the treatment meted to Senator Dino Melaye (Kogi West), stressing that Nigeria needs people like the lawmaker.

He told newsmen on Saturday that:

“I have concerns for Dino. His hands may not be as clean as a saint but a man like him has a role to play in building this country.

“We need men like Dino. Let everybody of goodwill fight to see that Dino is released; if he has criminal records, he should face it but he should not be kept in detention.

“He is intelligent. Let us see how we can save him from the hands of policemen. For a man like Dino, the police should show some level of leniency, because we need people like Dino in this country if we want this country to be great.”

Nigerians are taking the issue of getting their PVCs (Permanent Voters Cards) seriously. Remember a twitter user recently shared on how he disqualified 3 job seekers who claimed not to have PVC.

According to Afolayan Omotayo who shared the story on Twitter, he wrote;

“I helped a friend to conduct interviews for staffing in her office yesterday, 9 candidates were in attendance. I disqualified 3 of them who claimed not to have PVC automatically. That makes my job easy. It begins from there, extending to Mechanic, Electrician etc.”

"Suitors Now Prefer Our Maids To Our Daughters For Marriage” – Nigerian Parents Cries Out

Parent’s joy to see their children mature from childhood and get taken away in marriage in order to grow and establish their own homes.

However in recent times, it appears that kind of joy is being stolen from them by their own maids.

Some Nigerian Parents have chosen to vent via social media over the fact that their daughters are being rejected by suitors while their maids are being chosen in their stead.

According to the post, the maids end up being well trained especially in chores, welfare of the home, mannerism while their own daughters are languishing in search of a man for marriage.

It is quite an irony because these same maids are trained by the mothers who chose to train them instead of training their own kids to be groomed for the same qualities the suitors search for in a wife.

Pastor Arrested For Allegedly Raping A 9-Year-Old Daughter Of His Neighbour

Shocked as a 54-year-old pastor of a church, Christ Abiding Church, on Bankole Street, Somolu, Lagos, has been accused of raping a nine-year-old daughter of his neighbour.

The pastor, Udoh Okon, reportedly molested the girl in his wife’s shop on several occasions before the alleged crime was reported to the police on April 18.

It was gathered that the mother of the girl had observed semen dripping out of her private parts while she was asleep. After pestering her, she allegedly told her mother that Okon slept with her and that he had been doing so since 2017.

The Pedro Police Division consequently arrested the pastor, who was paraded on Wednesday by the state Commissioner of Police, Edgal Imohimi.

Imohimi said although the pastor denied the allegation, a medical examination of the girl revealed that her hymen had been ruptured.

He said, “The command recorded a case of defilement which was reported at the Pedro Police Station. According to the complaint received from one Peace Effiong, her nine-year-old daughter has been behaving unusually. So, on April 13, 2018, while the little girl was asleep, the mother observed that semen was dripping from her private parts.

“She was alarmed. She woke up the girl who told her that one Pastor Udo Okon, the man in charge of Christ Abiding Church, had been having unlawful carnal knowledge of her since last year. The victim went further to reveal that it was in the pastor’s wife’s shop that she was raped.  Investigation into the case is in progress.”

The pastor, in an interview denied the allegation, lamenting that the victim’s mother had connived with his “spiritual enemies” to blackmail him.

He said he had begged Effiong sometime in December 2017 while she was punishing the girl for being molested by some men.

Okon said the girl usually came to his shop where he sold drinks to assist him, adding that he was shocked when her mother accused him of the offence.

He said, “Sometime in December last year, I saw some people on the street. When I asked them what happened, they said the woman was beating her daughter. I joined them and went to her shop. I saw the girl kneeling and raising a stone. She was crying.

“Her mother said somebody in her compound reported to her that some people made love to her in the compound many times. I begged her and advised her that any time she wanted to punish the girl, she should not do so in the public.

“I left and went back to my shop. My shop and the woman’s are close to each other. Sometimes, when I am passing by with a bag, the girl would collect it to show respect. Sometimes when I am working, she will come and ask if she should help me.

“A few days ago while I was arranging bottles in my shop, she came again. I asked her to help me collect empty bottles from another shop. She helped me to bring the bottles and kept them outside. My wife was around that day.

“I was surprised to be accused that I raped the girl; I am old enough to be her grandfather. I never did such a thing in my life. God knows that I never did it. I swear before God. I have been a pastor in the church for almost 30 years now and I have never done anything wrong.”
