United Nations Peacekeepers Finally Departs Liberia After 15 Years

The UN said the peacekeepers were departing a “stable and grateful Liberia” as peacekeeping mission in the country formally ceased operations on Friday after aiding Liberia’s transition from ravaging civil war to a hopeful era of peace.

The conclusion of the 15-year operation follows a landmark election that resulted in the country’s first transfer of power from one elected president to another in 70 years.  The newly elected President, George Manneh Weah, spoke for many Liberians as he thanked the UN for helping to make that possible.

“In our darkest days, the UN stood with us,” he said in his inaugural address in January.

Mr. Weah, a former football star, won the presidency in a runoff election in December, succeeding Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, who had served since 2006.

Speaking at an event last week in the capital, Monrovia, to mark the completion of the peacekeeping mission, known as UNMIL, he pledged that the good work of the UN will not be forgotten. “We will not fight again, we promise you,” he said

The Security Council established the peacekeeping mission for Liberia in October 2003, as violence lingered even after warring factions agreed to a cease-fire and a plan for political rebuilding.

As peacekeepers first arrived, “the entire country was in turmoil,” recalled Lt. Gen. Daniel Opande, the first commander of UN forces in Liberia, in a recent interview.  “People were moving from place to place, looking for safety or for food.”

A newly secure environment enabled more than a million refugees and internally displaced persons to return to their homes.

The Government established its authority throughout the country and by now has successfully held three presidential elections.  According to the UN Department of Peacekeeping Operations, the Nigerian troops were the military backbone of (UNMIL), from 2003 to 2018 while about 20,000 Nigerians served in Liberia, with more than 1,500 women.

However, their service did not come without sacrifice as 200 peacekeepers lost their lives due to illness, accidents or other causes while serving in Liberia.  With peace elusive in many regions where UN forces have been deployed for years, the auspicious conclusion of the Liberia mission represents a success for UN peacekeeping, which has 110,000 men and women deployed in 15 operations worldwide.

UN Deputy Secretary-General, Ms Amina Mohammed, noted during her visit to Liberia recently that a generation ago, Liberia was in “free-fall”.  According to her, “the closure of UNMIL marks the transition of all three countries to peace and democracy.”

In a sobering statement to the Security Council in New York, UN Secretary-General António Guterres praised the successes of peacekeeping in West Africa.

The UN chief, however, highlighted the “serious challenges” that confront ongoing deployments in several other African countries and called for advances in military equipment and preparedness on the limits and roles of UN peacekeepers.  “Put simply, peace operations cannot succeed if they are deployed instead of a political solution, rather than in support of one,” he said.  In Liberia, a broadly shared commitment to a new, democratic political order was an essential key to progress.

The 2017 presidential election, which led to the victory of Weah, was a collective success for all Liberians, said Farid Zarif, the former Afghan diplomat who has served as the Secretary-General’s Special Representative and head of UNMIL for nearly three years. “It was a culmination of all the hard work that was done in post-conflict Liberia – on the part of the people of Liberia, the political leaders, the media, the civil society organisations,” Zarif said.  One of UNMIL’s core mandates was to help the Liberia National Police build its capacity to take over security responsibilities.

In July 2016, the UN handed over all security tasks to the Liberian authorities – a benchmark on the path to the March 2018 full withdrawal of the mission.  Bintou Keïta, the UN Assistant Secretary-General for Peacekeeping Operations, saw first-hand the results of the years of mentoring, training, and capacity-building.  She said during a recent visit to Liberia: “One proof that it worked is that there was no such huge violence during the preparations for the election.”

With stability restored and UNMIL planning to exit, the mission partnered with local organisations on development projects that could improve the lives of the Liberian people.  A series of “quick impact” projects were carried out across the country, including sustainable farming, agriculture, baking collectives, recycling, climate action, and urban development.

Yacoub El Hillo, the UN Humanitarian Coordinator in Liberia, said that the projects are an example of ongoing UN support for sustainable peace and development.  “It is true that UNMIL is closing, but through projects like these, new openings are being made possible for Liberians to go further,” said El Hillo, who will stay on as the UN Resident Coordinator, working with numerous UN agencies whose development work in Liberia will carry on.

Despite all of its achievements, Liberia still remains fragile on many fronts, noted Special Representative Zarif adding “We should not just presume that everything is fine and leave the country without any assistance.”

“Liberia is going to continue to require the solidarity, the support, and help of the international community for the long haul but they have already started demonstrating that they are the ones who are responsible for the future of their country.”

Ghanaian Jollof Rice Smells Like Perfume, Nigerian Jollof Rice Is 100% - Nigerian Beautiful Lady

Nigerian lady identified as, Glory Osei, who is currently vacationing in Ghana, has given her opinion about the Ghanaian Jollof rice, which according to her, smells like perfume.

According to Glory, the environment in Ghana is more serene than it is in most Nigerian cities. In her opinion, she believes that Nigerians are always in a hurry and one will need to wonder where other people are rushing to

Ghanaian Jollof rice smells like perfume. I prefer my perfume on my clothes and not in my rice

See her Instagram post;

As a Nigerian in Nigeria you have no idea how much noise you consume until you get to a place like Accra and your ear is not about to explode because generator is a status symbol. The people here aren’t constantly in a hurry like Nigerians, I wonder where we always rushing to😔. .
Honestly Accra is perfect for a city break if you don’t want to travel far.

A one way ticket from Lagos to Accra is around N40,000-N50,000, and if you are resilient you can travel by road. .
I love this city and the people but I still won’t go anywhere near their jollof rice (I’m 100% in support of Nigerian jollof), I made an attempt few days ago but I just can’t handle perfumed rice😩. I prefer my perfume on my clothes and not in my rice😂😂. .

This Viral Facebook Post Is Why You Should Pay Attention

Stop sending your kids out with their friends knowing that they don’t have any money on them. Pay attention!

Read the story by Facebook user, Demeshe Brown:
"Stop sending your kids out with their friends knowing that they don’t have any money on them. I was working today and eight young guys came in and they all ordered and one of them was kinda lingering on the side and another joked “ HAH, you THOUGHT you were bout to get something” after he finished placing his order... and the lil dude nicely laughed it off and ordered one cookie , while all 7 of his “friends” ate GREAT.. and didn’t offer him a thing. Then he must’ve found some more change bc he came back up and ordered another cookie. I waited until they were about to go and caught the lil guy before he went out.. I rushed a whole plate to him like “you forgot your order sir, sorry it took so long” and whispered to him “Pay attention to how ppl treat you.”... Not to mention, he was a young black kid and all of his friends weren’t..  We can’t let our own go out sad. I can’t do it.

48-Year-Old Pastor Jailed 14 Years For Trafficking Two Children

A Kaduna State-based cleric, Pastor Bawa Madaki, who trafficked two children, aged five and seven years old, has been sentenced to 14 years imprisonment by a High Court in Nasarawa State on Monday without an option of fine in a judgment delivered.

The 48-year-old Madaki was arrested by the police in May 2015, before he was handed over to operatives of the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons and other related matters.

The pastor was reportedly arraigned on two counts of fraudulently procuring the two underage children from their parents in the Zanzo Kataf Local Government Area of Kaduna State.

Pastor Bawa Madaki, who doesn't display any atom of Christianity, subsequently sent one child to Lagos in “an illegal adoption arrangement and the other to Federal Capital Territory, Abuja as a domestic worker, thus depriving their parents of the children.”

According to the NAPTIP Head of Press and Public Relations, Josiah Emerole, said Madaki’s actions contravened Section 19 (e) of the Trafficking in Persons (Prohibition) Law Enforcement and Administration Act.
He said, “A cleric, Pastor Bawa Madaki, from Kaduna State, has been sentenced to 14 years’ imprisonment for child trafficking. The accused was arraigned on two counts of fraudulently procuring two underage children from their parents.

“The trial commenced on June 23, 2015, and on Monday, March 26, 2018, the court found the accused guilty.

“The Director-General, NAPTIP, Julie Okah-Donli, has therefore cautioned the public against illegal adoption and engagement of underage children as domestic workers, who are often maltreated and abused by their employers.

“We warn detractors to desist from such acts as the long arm of the law will catch up with them if they fail to do so. This brings the convictions secured by NAPTIP to 342.”

Bill Gates: Why I Spoke Directly To Nigerian Leaders

World's second richest man, Bill Gates, again on Monday criticised the Federal Government’s Economic Recovery and Growth Plan.

Gates, in an interview with the CNN, said that the Federal Government’s investment in education and health was not good enough.

“While it may be easier to be polite, it’s more important to face facts so that you can make progress,” the philanthropist told a room of Nigeria’s government elite that included the President.

In an exclusive television interview with the CNN, Gates said he spoke out to implore Nigerian politicians to focus on human capital and its large youth population.

“The current quality and quantity of investment in this young generation in health and education just isn’t good enough. So, I was very direct,” he told CNN.

The philanthropist had at a special session of the National Economic Council, on Thursday, said Nigeria would do better with strong investments in health and education, rather than concentrate on physical infrastructure to the detriment of human capital development.

He had said,  “Nigeria is one of the most dangerous places in the world to give birth, with the fourth worst maternal mortality rate in the world ahead of only Sierra Leone, Central African Republic and Chad. One in three Nigerian children is chronically malnourished.

“In upper middle-income countries, the average life expectancy is 75 years. In lower middle-income countries, it’s 68; in low-income countries, it’s 62. In Nigeria, it is lower still, just 53 years.

“The Nigerian government’s Economic Recovery and Growth Plan identifies investing in the people as one of three strategic objectives. But the execution priorities don’t fully reflect people’s needs, prioritising physical capital over human capital. People without roads, ports and factories can’t flourish. And roads, ports and factories without skilled workers to build and manage them can’t sustain an economy.”

But the Kaduna State Governor, Nasir el-Rufai, in an interview with State House correspondents after the NEC meeting,  faulted the claim of Gates.

He said the plan had enough provisions for education and health, adding that what was needed was for states to complement efforts of the Federal Government.

MMM founder, Sergei Mavrodi, Died Of Heart Attack

Russian businessman, Sergei Panteleevich Mavrodi, whose MMM pyramid scheme deprived millions of Russians of their savings in the 1990s and Nigerians in 2016, has died of a heart attack, according to Russia media.

According to reports, the Russian financial fraudster and previously a deputy of the State Duma was rushed to the hospital late on March 25 with pain in his chest and died after hours.

Mavrodi's MMM financial pyramid was a typical Ponzi scheme in which earlier investors receive their profits from subsequent investors. Mavrodi promised returns of 20 percent to 75 percent a month, as well as lotteries and bonuses for investors.

As soon as the number of new clients stopped growing, the pyramid collapsed, causing huge financial losses for at least 10 million people, in some cases leaving them destitute.

In 1994, Mavrodi was elected as a lawmaker, a decision he later said was to ensure he received immunity from prosecution. In 1996, he lost his parliamentary mandate.

In 2007 Sergei Mavrodi was convicted in a Russian court of defrauding 10,000 investors out of 110 million rubles ($4.3 million). Mavrodi claimed he was not the beneficiary of the donations and that he was not used to a flamboyant lifestyle.

Mavrodi said that his goal with MMM-2011 is to destroy the current financial system, which he considers unfair, which would allow something new to take its place. MMM-2011 was able to function openly as Ponzi schemes and financial pyramids are not illegal under Russian law.

In January 2011, Mavrodi launched another pyramid scheme called MMM-2011, asking investors to buy so-called Mavro currency units. He frankly described it as a pyramid, adding "It is a naked scheme, nothing more. People interact with each other and give each other money.

In May 2012 he froze the operation and announced that there would be no more payouts.

From 2011-16, Mavrodi launched Ponzi schemes under the MMM brand in India, China, South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Nigeria.

Jose Antonio Abreu, Noted Venezuelan Musician, Dies Aged 78

Jose Antonio Abreu, a musician, politician and economist who created a network of more than 1,500 orchestras and choirs for young people in Venezuela, died on Saturday at age 78.

Known as "El Maestro" in his home country, Abreu started the project in 1975, and his internationally-acclaimed "El Sistema" ("The System") has grown to include more than 900,000 children, taught by 10,000 teachers throughout Venezuela.

"They are boys that we are taking away from drugs and violence. Just sitting a boy in a rehearsal to play, when he could be on the corner smoking marijuana, is already a very important achievement," he told AFP a few years ago.

Education Minister Elias Jaua hailed Abreu as "a great Venezuelan."

"Thanks to Maestro Jose Antonio Abreu for his beautiful legacy for the boys, girls and young people of Venezuela," Jaua wrote on Twitter.

"With devoted love and eternal gratitude to my mentor and father of El Sistema," Gustavo Dudamel, the conductor of the Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra and a product of Abreu's program, wrote on Twitter along with a photo of himself and "El Maestro."

Little is known about the personal life of Abreu, who was born on May 7, 1939 in Valera.

In addition to his landmark music program, Abreu also played a role in Venezuelan politics: he was a legislator and also served as culture minister during president Carlos Andrew Perez's second term.

10 Most Dangerous Animals In Africa You Need To Know

1) Hippopotamus

The hippo is responsible for more human fatalities in Africa than any other large animal. Male hippos actively defend their territories which run along the banks of rivers and lakes. Females have also been known to get extremely aggressive if they sense anyone coming in between their babies, who stay in the water while she feeds on the shore. Hippos can run at speeds of over 20 miles an hour and they have enormous jaws which host up to 20 inch canines.

2) Mosquito

The most dangerous creature in Africa is probably the mosquito since it’s responsible for killing more Africans than any other through the spread of malaria, dengue and other diseases. Malaria kills over a million Africans every year, most of these are children under the age of five.

Malaria is only spread by the female Anopheles mosquito. They are most active around dawn and dusk. There are in fact around 3,500 species of mosquito flying around and their average life-span is about two weeks.

3) Elephant

Image result for elephant
It’s unlikely you’ll bump into an elephant outside of a protected wildlife reserve, but when you encounter this 12,000 lb beast, things can potentially get ugly. African elephants, especially older bulls and young males, can be aggressive even when they’re not provoked. Most deaths occur by the elephant trampling their victims to death. In places where poaching is rife and/or the elephants’ habitats are threatened, elephants are more aggressive

4) Black Mamba

The Black Mamba (Dendroaspis polylepis) is one of Africa’s most dangerous snakes and feared in East, Central and Southern Africa. It’s aggressive when cornered and will not hesitate to strike. It can reach speeds of up to 12 mph (20 km/ph). It’s the largest venomous snake in Africa with adults reaching an average 2.5m. Black Mamba’s are not black at all, but brown/olive skinned. Their mouths are inky black which they show when threatened. Black Mambas live in savanna, scrub, tree hollows, and sometimes people’s homes. If a Black Mamba encounters prey it can strike up to 12 times, each time delivering enough neuro and cardio-toxic venom to kill a dozen men within one hour. Without anti-venom, the mortality rate is 100%.

5) Nile Crocodile

Crocodiles kill hundreds of people each year in Africa. The Nile Crocodile can be found in almost every major river throughout the continent as well as many lakes. Most fatalities occur while people are washing or collecting food near river banks and lake shores. Fishermen are also prone to attack as they slide their boats in and out of the water. Crocodiles attack by dragging their prey under water and drowning them. Some crocodiles will also then roll their bodies repeatedly to weaken their prey.

6) Great White Shark

Great White shark encounters are rare but attacks are serious when they happen, and have led to fatalities. While some adventure seekers will actively go out and dive with great whites, most of us should probably avoid contact. There have been more than 200 Great White shark attacks off the coast of South Africa in as many years. Great Whites attack by propelling themselves at their prey with great speed. They take a single huge bite and drag their victims down into deeper water. Then they let go and the prey just bleeds itself to death before being gobbled up.

7) Lion

Lions live throughout sub-Saharan Africa (except for forests and deserts) in protected areas. A 2005 study showed that lion attacks on man were on the rise in Tanzania and Mozambique. Sick male lions are mostly responsible for the hundreds of human deaths that occur each year because lion attacks.

8) Puff Adder

The Puff Adder (Bitis arietans) is considered to be Africa’s deadliest snake because it is responsible for the most human fatalities. Puff Adders reach an average length of around 1 meter, and they’re solidly built with a wide girth. Color patterns vary depending on where they live, their habitats extend throughout Africa except for dense rain forests and deserts. The Puff Adder has large fangs and its venom is powerful enough to kill a grown man with a single bite. Puff Adders rely on camouflage for protection and lie still if approached. Because of this, people tend to step on them and get bitten. Many fatalities occur because bites are not treated correctly, leading to infection and gangrene.

9) Cape Buffalo

Cape Buffalo are said to have killed more big game hunters than any other animal (and so they belong to the Big 5. Buffalo are thought to kill around 200 people every year, first they charge and then they gore their victims. An injured buffalo is incredibly dangerous. When you see Cape Buffalo in Africa, they’re usually not alone. They appear in very large (and intimidating) herds. Even when looking at them through binoculars from a distance, the males always seem to be staring right at you with intense dislike. Weighing in at over 700 kg’s (1540 lbs) most lions don’t even dare take a chunk out of this beast. Buffalo will mob any predator that dares to take its young.

10)  African Rhino

While the African rhino (both black and white) are fighting to survive and their numbers are dropping at alarming rates due to poaching – it’s still important to keep your guard if you get the chance to see one in the wild. Rhinos are large mammals (only second in size to the elephant), an adult white rhino can weigh in at 6,000 lb’s. Rhinos are shortsighted, a little bad tempered, which makes them very dangerous. They’ll charge at full force and use their horns to kill or injure what they deem to be a danger or annoyance to them. Never get in between a mother and her baby, or anywhere near an older male.
