Libya Returnee: I Witnessed The Sale Of 20 Nigerian Girls And Death Of 25 (Photo)

A Nigerian returnee from Libya has revealed that 25 compatriots, ferried from Nigeria to Libya by a trafficker identified as Charles, perished in the Sahara Desert, in the course of the journey.

The returnee, who identified himself as Alex Otoide, from Edo state, said seven members of the group also died inside a Libyan jail.

“We were 55 that travelled from here to Libya, 25 people died in the desert.More than seven people died from hunger and thirst inside the prison”, Otoide said in a report published by TheNation newspaper today.

Otoide spoke with journalists in a government camp in Benin City.

He said the human trafficking agent, Charles collected the N500, 000 from him with a promise of a better life in Europe. He, however, regretted that instead of Europe, he ended up in a Libyan jail.

He said but for providence, things could have been worse for him as he witnessed the sale of 20 Nigeria girls in the prison where they were all kept.

“They sold about 20 girls in the night. I saw it. It was God that saved me.”
“I left Nigeria with N500,000. I spent six months in Libya jail after the man that took my money ran away.
The Nation reported that many of the returnees look skinny and exhausted while some of the women among them came back to the country with babies, whose fathers are not known.

Charles, the returnees said, is running a transit camp in Libya for those who wanted to travel illegally across the Mediterranean to Europe.

He regularly made a trip back to Nigeria where he persuaded desperate young men and women that he can help them to get to Europe from Libya for a fee of about N500, 000.

But according to the deportees, after collecting the money, Charles usually abandoned them in Libya.

The human trafficking kingpin reportedly operated several bank accounts with different names in Nigeria through which he collected money from victims.

They alleged Charles kept Nigerians for days without food in his camp in Libya. Many of the migrants don’t even make it to Libya as they died of exhaustion in the Sahara desert, according to the migrants.

Osas Blessing, one of the returnees said Charles is among those nicknamed “burgers” or “connection man” on the Libya route.

He said:
“I gave Charles N450, 000 but when I got to Libya he increased it to N600, 000. He is very wicked. He does not care for human life. He is a Benin man. He will say if you die you die. He pushed us into the sea at the wrong time.
“I heard he just left Nigeria with new passengers to Libya. He has frustrated many Nigerians.”

Indian Jails 8 Donkeys For Eating Expensive Plants (Photo)

Eight donkeys have spent four days in an Indian jail for eating expensive plants. They did not go for trial. They were summarily incarcerated as the illegal eating took place near a prison.

It all happened in the northern Indian state of Uttar Pradesh.

The animals were arrested after eating  up “expensive” plants just outside the compound of the main jail in the state’s Jalaun district, over 200 km from capital Lucknow.

“Various types of saplings were planted in the jail premises for beautification. Those were damaged by the donkeys. Hence, I rounded them up,” jail chief Sita Ram Sharma told the media.

The donkeys were freed on Monday after a local politician of the state’s ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) intervened in the wake of a plea by the owner of the donkeys.

“For two days, I could not find my horses and donkeys. When I came to know that they are in jail, I sought the help from local BJP leaders to secure their release,” owner Kamlesh S. said.

Sale Of Nigerians In Libya, Slap On Our Face – Senate

The Senate has begun the investigation of the alleged sale of illegal African migrants “mostly Nigerians” as slaves in Libya, which it described as a slap on the face of Nigeria.

The probe was based on a motion moved by Senator Baba Kaka Garbai (Borno-Central) at the plenary on Wednesday, entitled, ‘Urgent Need to Protect Nigerian Citizens from the Libya Slavery Auction.’

President of the Senate, Bukola Saraki, said there was the need for Nigeria to do more to protect its citizens. He said, “As a country, truly, it is a slap on the face of all of us if Nigerians can be treated in this manner. Like somebody said, Ivory Coast that is not as big as us is taking action to see how they can bring their own citizens back. We need to be doing similar things.”

The lawmakers unanimously granted prayers of the motion, including to “condemn in totality the current depravity and sheer animalism being exhibited by these Libyans selling fellow Africans as slaves.”

They also urged the Federal Government to urgently investigate how many Nigerians were affected by the slave sales.

The lawmakers also urged the Federal Government to urgently commence the process of repatriation and rehabilitation of Nigerian citizens “caught up in these despicable treatment and human rights abuses.”

Arsenal 5 - O Huddersfield: The Gunners Maintained Their Perfect Home Record

Mesut Ozil inspired Arsenal to a dominant victory over Huddersfield as the Gunners maintained their perfect home record in the Premier League this season.
The midfielder, back in the side after recovering from injury, scored one goal and provided two assists as the hosts made it seven wins from seven at the Emirates.
Alexandre Lacazette gave Arsenal an early lead with a confident finish after being put through by Aaron Ramsey's clever flick.
The visitors went close to an equaliser when Petr Cech pushed Steve Mounie's shot onto the bar not long after the restart.
But Arsenal scored three goals in four minutes to end Huddersfield's hopes of getting a surprise result.
Ozil played a one-two with Alexis Sanchez before the former teed up substitute Olivier Giroud to convert from six yards out.
Soon after, Sanchez made it three with a volley from Ozil's lofted pass.
Ozil capped a superb individual display with a goal, placing the ball beyond Huddersfield goalkeeper Jonas Lossl after being put through by Ramsey, before Giroud's close-range finish in the final minutes completed the rout.
Arsenal, who remain fourth, host second-placed Manchester United on Saturday.

Arsenal's superb home run continues

The Gunners had won their 11 previous Premier League games on home soil prior to the visit of Huddersfield, a run stretching back to April.
Against a side that had not won away from home since the opening game of the season, win number 12 for the hosts always seemed likely, a view that was only enhanced when Lacazette struck after just three minutes.
The early goal hinted at a long night for the visitors, but Arsenal - initially - failed to build on it. They laboured for more than an hour against a disciplined Terriers side, misplacing passes in defence and leaving gaps that more clinical sides than Huddersfield would have exploited.
But when the second goal arrived on 68 minutes, the Huddersfield defence wilted and, with Giroud also hitting the post and Sanchez shooting over from close range, the win could have been even more comprehensive.
The victory for Arsenal, who have now scored 20 goals in seven home games and conceded just four, sets them up nicely for the visit of Jose Mourinho's side this weekend. Should the Gunners win that game then they will move to within a point of United.
"We wanted to take advantage of being at home and we did that again," said Ramsey after the game.
"It is another three points and now we can go into the Manchester United game at the weekend full of confidence. Hopefully it will be a very successful week for us."

Man City 2-1 Southampton: Magnificent Sterling Gave City A Late Win

Raheem Sterling's 96th-minute winner sank Southampton to give Manchester City a club-record 12th-successive Premier League victory which restores their eight-point lead at the top of the table.
Sterling had scored decisive late goals in City's previous two wins, over Feyenoord and Huddersfield, but his third strike of the week was his most dramatic of the lot, and sparked wild celebrations from City boss Pep Guardiola and his bench.
City had taken the lead at the start of the second half when Saints defender Virgil van Dijk got the final touch on Kevin de Bruyne's free-kick.
But it appeared Saints got their reward for a determined display when Romeu swept home Sofiane Boufal's pull-back with 15 minutes remaining.
Sterling, who has now scored 13 goals this season, had other ideas.
He had already seen a goal disallowed for a foul on Saints keeper Fraser Forster moments earlier, but was not to be denied - cutting in from the left, exchanging passes with De Bruyne and bending the ball past Fraser Forster.
Guardiola's side had already made the most successful start in Premier League history, with 37 points from their first 13 games.
This win saw them become the first side to reach 40 points from 14 games, and maintains the advantage of eight points over Manchester United that they had at the start of the week.

Nigerian Woman Jailed In Dubai For Human Trafficking, Flees

Operatives of the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons and other releated offences have launched a manhunt for a 33-year-old woman, Perebi Otubo, who was jailed in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, for trafficking Nigerian girls.
Otubo, who is reportedly hiding in an unidentified location in Nigeria, allegedly belonged to an international syndicate which trafficked girls to Dubai and Abu Dhabi cities to work as commercial sex workers.
Our correspondent learnt that Otubo, who hails from Bomadi, Delta State, went into hiding in Nigeria after she returned from Dubai in July 2017.
The woman reportedly fled when some members of the syndicate were arrested by NAPTIP.
The agency’s Head, Press and Public Relations, Josiah Emerole, who confirmed the manhunt, said Otubo’s accomplices were being prosecuted in the court.
Emerole said, “Otubo is wanted for human trafficking. She has been linked to an international human trafficking ring that specialises in trafficking young girls from Nigeria to Dubai and Abu Dhabi in UAE for sexual exploitation.
“She was recently jailed in Dubai for human trafficking. She was released in July 2017 and is currently at large, hiding somewhere in Nigeria. Her accomplices and recruiters in Nigeria have been arrested by NAPTIP and are currently facing prosecution in court. We want the public to assist us in locating her.”
Also, the anti-trafficking agency said it had met with tour operators, travel agents and airline operators to ensure that human traffickers did not infiltrate them.
The NAPTIP Director-General, Julie Okah-Donli, said travel agents must be mindful of the clause in their contract agreement that travellers shall not “be exploited at their places of destination.”
Okah-Donli noted that the penalty for aiding and abetting a human trafficker, intentionally or unintentionally upon conviction, was “a jail term and a fine of not more than N10m.
“Tour operators and travel agents cannot afford to passively sit by while human trafficking is promoted through their means of livelihood. They must recognise the signs of trafficking and possible exploitation and how to report such cases to us,” she said.
