'Doctors sent our girl home to die': Parents hit out over suicide of anorexic pupil, 15, just five days after her clinic discharged her

Pippa McManus died at Gatley railway station in Stockport, in December 2015 She stepped in front of a train after a family dispute over her excessive gym use Problems started when she was 12 with her condition leading her to self-harm.

The parents of an anorexic schoolgirl who stepped in front of a train five days after being released from a top psychiatric unit said last night that their daughter was failed by authorities ‘from beginning to end’.

Pippa McManus, 15, who weighed as little as four stone, committed suicide after a family argument about her excessive gym use ended with her running out of the house shouting: ‘I am going to kill myself.’

Her body was later found near a local railway station. The girl’s parents, Marie and James McManus, had expressed reservations about her release from the private Priory clinic, where her treatment was being funded by NHS England, but felt they were ‘left with no choice’, they told an inquest in Stockport.

Speaking after a jury ruled the youngster – known as Pip – committed suicide, Mrs McManus, 51, broke down in tears. She said: ‘Pip spent the last three years fighting against anorexia, malnutrition, depression and self-harm. We believe the failings in our daughter’s care from beginning to end resulted in her death.‘Effective treatment is needed quickly, and if this had been available to our beautiful daughter maybe she would still be alive today. Maybe we would not have needed this inquest.’

The couple, who have three other children, took Pippa to a doctor around Christmas 2012 when she began ‘spiralling out of control’, becoming obsessed with having a ‘fat’ chin, preoccupied with her diet and exercising fanatically, joining running and boxing clubs and surviving on very little food.

She was treated by local mental health services before being detained under the Mental Health Act at the Priory Hospital in Altrincham in September 2014.

The inquest charted how Pippa struggled with her eating disorder, had self-harmed and threatened suicide during her 15-month stay in the specialist unit.

A doctor has described Pip's case as 'probably the most severe' case of anorexia nervosa she has seen, and at one point she weighed just 27kg, while a pencil sharpener blade was also found inside one of her teddy bears.

Pippa was allowed a home visit in February 2015, but seven goodbye letters to her parents, siblings, friends and even her pet dog were found and she was returned to hospital.

One note described how she wanted to ‘grow up and have a life, but I don’t have one’. She added: ‘I cannot fight anorexia any more than I have done. I have tried so very hard, but it has won me.’

Dr Janet Walsh, a consultant adolescent psychiatrist in charge of the teenager’s treatment, told the inquest there was nothing to make her or her colleagues believe that Pippa was a suicide risk when she was discharged on December 4, 2015, on extended home leave.

The jury agreed that sending her home was appropriate but stressed that the discharge was poorly planned by Trafford Child And Adolescent Mental Health Services.

They also said it was not made clear to Pippa’s parents that the risk of suicide was greater in the first few days after her discharge.

Deborah Coles, director of campaign group Inquest which has been supporting the family, said: ‘Pip’s death has exposed a mental health system which pushed through the discharge of a highly vulnerable child without any of the support or care in place to make sure she would be safe.

Her terrified family knew there was huge risk. Their concerns were dismissed and minimised throughout.’ Mrs McManus has now set up the Pip Foundation to help the charity Anorexia And Bulimia Care. She said: ‘Pippa hated herself. She thought she was the ugliest person in the world. Whatever you said, it didn’t make a difference because that’s what the anorexia was telling her. ‘We needed mental health workers to work with us but they weren’t there to do that. We were let down by everybody.’ She added: ‘The tear in the thread of our family will never be mended. We do not want Pip’s life and suffering to have been in vain.

Nigerians react to the fire outbreak at a section of the Oba of Lagos' Palace

The Oba of Lagos, Rilwan Akiolu, in the Iga Iduganran area of Lagos Island yesterday, battle a fire outbreak at a section of the palace

This comes just a week after the controversy following Oba Akiolu's supposed refusal to properly greet the 51st Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi, at an event recently.

Ooni Ogunwusi released a statement insisting he would continue to hold Oba of Lagos in high esteem and continually give him respect irrespective of Oba Rilwan Akiolu's attitude toward him.

On the other hand, speaking through one of his white cap chiefs, Lateef Ajose, the Lagos Monarch said he did not ignore the Ooni of Ife at the public function as being interpreted by many Nigerians. Lateef said the manner in which the Oba greeted the Ooni is the culturally acclaimed way of greeting by a monarch in Lagos.

Nigerians however feel that there's a relation between the fire incident.

Real Madrid 3-0 Atletico Madrid: Magnificent Cristiano Ronaldo fires another Champions League hat-trick

Cristiano Ronaldo scored all three of Real Madrid's goal as the holders set themselves on course for the Champions League final with a commanding first leg win over local rivals Atletico.

The Portuguese forward took his tally of Champions League goals to 103 in an outstanding individual display at the Santiago Bernabeu. Ronaldo's close-range header from Casemiro's volleyed cross gave the hosts a first-half lead after just nine minutes and Madrid were to take advantage in the second period as Diego Simeone's side chased an away goal.

A bold counter on 72 minutes was ended by a powerful volley from Madrid's all-time record scorer, whose hat- trick, a 42nd for Los Merengues, was assured soon after as he was on hand to turn home Lucas Vazquez's cutback from close range.

Atletico now face a huge task to overturn the three goal deficit at the Vicente Calderon on May 10 in what will be the stadium's penultimate game.

No side has retained the Champions League trophy under its current structure but Zinedine Zidane's men look well- placed to reach the final a year after beating Atletico on penalties.

If Real Madrid enter final, they will face the winners of the tie between Juventus and Monaco, whose first leg is tomorrow.

Una go soon Die for nothing, Our Mumu should be over - Charlie Boy

Arrogantly ignorant Nigerian youths, una cup don full. Why must fellow Nigerians remind me daily that the youths are irredeemable. Joor, It is high time una receive sense by force or else many of una go just die for nothing and the few wey go remain go chop sand sand.

Our Mumu should be over. E don do. I gree say Na our elders and our yeye leaders put us for this roundabout. But our Mumu should be over. Haba!!!!!!! Sometimes, I dey wonder if the mumugiosity of Nigerian youths na curse. E dey really pain me when I see Nigerian youths dey suffer yet dem no wan fight for their lives. I dey wonder how a very small margin wey no even reach 1% of the entire population of we country go pack the future of over 170million people keep inside Agbada and most of una just go dey look Uche face like zombie. To make an already complicated matter worse, youths, these days, believe that you can get something out of nothing, that you can reap where you did not sow, and that it doesn't matter if what you are doing is wrong, as long as you are making money from it, it is the right thing. Which kin Mumu thinking be dat?

Almost on a daily basis, some mumu youths of this country go call me to say dem wan join illuminati. Like say na illuminati be the work wey I dey do. One guy even call me one day and without any caution or restraint, he said he is ready to sell his soul to the devil. Shey dem tell am say na me be the devil ? Abi, Na so to get this money? I just dey pity most of you youths.

I pity una because the same set of people who have been selling your lives to outsiders since independence are still in power making sure you are not seen or heard. They are neither tired nor bothered about your tribulations. They deliberately make sure that you do not get what you deserve, no enabling environment, no employment, dream killers, creating poverty all over the place. They wear a veil of holiness to cover their evil faces and pretend to be fighting for your interest. Mumu youths, una go still go ahead to celebrate them and vote for them because of 1000 Naira. Me, I know say some of una go chop sand sand if you remain for this mumu lane, I swear to God. I know that some of you are not ready to come out of your mumugiosity. I know some of you will not even respond quickly to this call of nationalism, una own Na to talk nonsense on top internet. I also know that some of you will be unwilling to hold the rope of emancipation which is being thrown out to you. However, I must tell you the truth. The truth is that things will NEVER change except una decide to genuinely change it. Na since independence people don dey talk say Nigeria go better and now, e still never better. Shebi If I need my light on, I suppose fit get up from the chair and switch it on ? But in Nigeria, we believe praying can help us switch on the light, hence, we won't bother. Oh Lord, shame wan kill me here no remain. Because as long as una want to dey promote Miracles ahead of Hardwork Una go die for nothing.

Anyway sha, I still believe in the exceptional youths of Nigeria. I have met a few who are willing to reclaim their country from the hands of political criminals with insatiable desire to loot and plunder. Already, we have started seeing skirmishes in the northern part of the country because they are simply tired of sucking up to politicians who fail to keep their promises with the suffering people. Fact is, When the People are tired of political exploitation, A Nation is Reawakened. When Politicians continue in the path of Reckless Criminality, A Mob is encouraged. When frustration becomes the only mood in vogue in a nation, then, the people are left with nothing else but to defiantly fight for their future. You get to a Point where you say "DAMN THE CONSEQUENCES" and you Unleash the MOB in you to Fight for the Interest of all. There will be no hope in sight and Nigerians will continue to Suffer times 3 if the youths Continue to Remain Docile, Indifferent, Intolerant to one Another and Religiously Hypnotized. When Citizens feel Cheated, Looted, Corrupted and Criminalized, They Fight to Change the Status quo not wait for Politicians.

Therefore, Nigerians who are disillusioned and disenchanted with the failings of Government, Political Leadership, Religious and Moral Institutions, must as a matter of urgency, begin to organize themselves for sustained activism. They must begin to organise themselves to produce options come 2019, because over their dead bodies will it be business as usual. The battle against political criminality, religious and political slavery, must be fought with all our might. We already know that our common enemy are the politicians, and the ex military generals now in agbada playing chess with our lives. What is left is for everyone to get up on their feet and fight these criminals and legislooters. The time is ripe to begin to demand for good governance and accountability from our political representatives. You will never get the supply of good governance except you demand for it. And to effectively make this demand, we must all come together as one indivisible body of frustrated and vexed Nigerians who are genuinely concerned about changing the high handedness in governance and the unending spate of repression by political office holders.

The OurMumuDonDo movement is open to collaborating with all Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs); Civil Society Organisations (CSOs); Activists; Revolutionist Movements; Journalists, Musicians, Photographers, Painters, Filmmakers, Poets, Designers, Developers, Cartoonists, Podcasters, especially Nigerians in diaspora. A pastor admits impregnating teen who was living with his family and is sentenced to just 3-6 years in prison

Suburban Philadelphia pastor Jacob Malone on Friday pleaded guilty to institutional sex assault, corruption of minors and child endangerment Malone and prosecutors had reached earlier plea deal that called for a 2-4 year jail term, but the judge rejected it as too lenient Victim, now 20, told police the sexual assault began in fall 2014, when she was 17 and living with Malone, his wife and three children She said the father-of-three, who was her guardian, gave her alcohol twice when she turned 18 and molested her once when she became drunk

Jacob Malone, a married pastor from suburban Philadelphia has pleaded guilty to sexually assaulting and impregnating a teenager who lived with his family and has been sentenced to three to six years in prison.

Jacob Malone, 35, of Exton, learned his fate on Friday after entering guilty pleas to counts of institutional sex assault, corruption of minors and child endangerment.

He also must register as a sex offender for 15 years and undergo court- mandated sex counseling.

Malone and prosecutors had reached an earlier plea deal that called for a two-year minimum jail term, but Judge Jacqueline Cody rejected that deal as too lenient a month ago.

Malone, who is married and has three young children, was working at Calvary Fellowship, a nondenominational church in Downingtown, when authorities say he began sexually assaulting the girl in the fall of 2014, when she was 17 years old.

She gave birth a year ago to their daughter. The young woman, now aged 20, maintained that Malone took advantage of her 'mentally, physically, spiritually' while acting as her guardian.

When given a chance to speak in court, Malone admitted he gave the girl alcohol but said the sexual encounters were consensual.

He apologized, saying his 'failures and weaknesses' had hurt her, her family, and his family.

'I wept over President Buhari’s health' - former Osun state governor, Bisi Akande says

Former Osun state governor and one of the founding fathers of APC, Bisi Akande, has expressed concern over President Buhari's failing health.

In a statement released yesterday, Akande said President Buhari's absence at the wedding of Tunde Sabiu, Buhari's adopted son and PA, over the weekend, made him weep, knowing that his ailment caused him not to attend such an important occasion.

Akande stated that last December when he saw President Buhari, he complained of his stressed look.

“The health of the leader is intricately intertwined with the health of the nation. It is more so in a delicately fragile union of nations called Nigeria. I did not see President Buhari at the wedding of his adopted son in Kaduna, last Saturday. I was sad and I wept. When last we met at the wedding of his daughter in Abuja, last December, I complained to him that I was not happy about his stressful looks. His reply connoted some allusions to circumstances where an honest man fighting corruption is surrounded mostly by unpatriotic greedy ruling class. He felt painfully frustrated. He assured me he would soon be going on vacation. I then knew that corruption has effectively been fighting back. And I prayed for Nigeria. That was why Asiwaju Bola Tinubu and I rushed to meet him in London in February this year when he was sick and could not return as scheduled from his vacation. The rest is history but we must appreciate that his poor health is already taking a toll on the health of Nigeria as a polity. There are two challenges facing the country today. The first and most critical is the health of the President which, unfortunately, is a development beyond his control and for which we did not prepare. The second is the disorder and lack of cohesion between the National Assembly and the Presidency. These are two great red flag dangers that have the potential of plunging the country into unprecedented chaos and of destabilising the gains of democracy since 1999. The greatest danger, however, is for political interests at the corridor of power attempting to feast on the health of Mr President in a dangerous manner that may aggravate the problems between the Executive and the National Assembly without realizing if, in the end, it could drag the entire country into avoidable doom. “As delicately fragile the Union of Nations making up Nigeria, so delicately fragile the democracy and the rule of laws governing the polity of the Union called Nigerian Federation. Certain Nigerian leaders, having been blindfolded by corruption, assume the possibility of using money in manipulating the national security agencies to intimidate, suppress and hold down certain ethnic nationalities or playing one ethnic nationality against the other with a view to undermining the constitution and perversely upturning the rule of law. To avoid the ugly consequences of letting President Buhari’s ailments throw Nigeria into confusion, I am urging all Nigerians to begin to pray for his divine healing and perfect recovery. Let me warn today that those who wish to harvest political gains out of the health of the President are mistaken. This is not Nigeria of 1993. We are in a new national and global era of constitutionality and order. We hope Nigerians have enough patience to learn from history. My greatest fear, however, is that the country should not be allowed to slide into anarchy and disorder of a monumental proportion.”he said

Prophet arrested for taking N70m, three houses to cure fibroids

The police in Lagos have commenced an investigation into a case involving one Oladele , 45, a prophet at a church in Oke Ira, in the Ogba area of the state.

The police at the Special Fraud Unit , Ikoyi , said the prophet was being held for allegedly defrauding a businesswoman of N70m, a duplex , two five - bedroomed bungalows, a Lexus and a Toyota Highlander, 2014 mode.

We learnt that the woman’s ordeal began sometime in 2007 after she was told by a medical doctor that her womb would have to be removed to heal her of fibroids.

She was said to have rejected the doctor's advice and resorted to a desperate search for an alternative solution, during which she was introduced to the prophet.

The woman, who was 43 years old at the time he met Oladele , had reportedly been battling with the ailment for 14 years, which made her to bleed from her private parts.

It was gathered that the 45-year-old prophet promised to make the fibrous tissue disappear and gave her some concoctions after collecting N98,000 for the service.

The bleeding was said to have stopped. However, the victim’s excitement was short-lived when the bleeding recurred two weeks after and she returned to the prophet .

It was said that Oladele subsequently started coming up with different gimmicks to extort money from the woman, including a claim that her husband was after her life and those of her three children.

A senior police officer at the SFU said, “The woman is from a prominent family in Lagos State and she is a businesswoman. She had fibroids for 14 years and was driven from pillars to posts, looking for healing.

Eventually in 2007 , she met a woman who introduced her to the prophet. “ The prophet told her that her husband was the cause of the heavy blood flowed. He said the husband wanted to kill her and that as long as the blood flows, the husband would continue to make more money.

He said the husband had to be eliminated for her to live well . He also told her to bring her children – two females and a male – for spiritual cleansing , saying their lives were also in danger.

“He gave the children some concoctions. He lived in the woman’ s house in Ogba with her children whenever the husband was not around. By this time, he had taken control of the woman and her children.

At a point, he told the woman to build a five -bedroomed duplex for him at Ijoko (Ogun State ), which she did within three months. She also purchased a Toyota Highlander, 2014 model , and a Lexus GX470, 2013 model, for him.

” It was learnt that the woman's son ran mad a few years ago after taking some herb from the prophet. It was learnt that Oladele took the boy to his town in Ado Ekiti, Ekiti State , where he was healed.

“He told the woman that she must build two five bed - roomed bungalows for him in Ado Ekiti so that her son madness would not return . After she built the houses, he told the woman to stop having sex with her husband if she wanted to live long.

“The woman made several transfers into his three bank accounts . We have been able to get records of the transfers to one of his banks which ran into over N70m , ” the source added.

Thomasloaded gathered that luck ran out on the prophet sometime in March when it dawned on one of the woman’s children, a lawyer , that the family was being defrauded after he allegedly collected another millions of naira from her for spiritual cleansing .

Another investigator at the SFU said , “ The lawyer informed their father and the case was reported to the police . The prophet was arrested in Ado Ekiti, where he had gone to obtain a chieftaincy title .” An official of the SFU, SP Ngozi Braide , who spoke on the incident on behalf of the unit’ s Commissioner of Police , Ibrahim Lamorde, said the suspect confessed to the fraud.

She said, “ We have been able to trace about N70m to his bank account . In his statement , he said he healed the woman of the fibroids .” In the prophet’ s statement to the police , he said the houses and the two vehicles were gifts the woman gave him.

He said he did not use charms on her and her children. The man also told investigators that he gave some money to the woman that introduced the victim to her . Braide said the police had launched a manhunt for the accomplice , adding that the prophet had been granted administrative bail and would be charged to court after the completion of investigation.

“ We urge members of the public to be wary of people who devise various means of defrauding them of their hard -earned money. Be careful about the kind of people you seek help from , ” Braide added.

'Kemen has called me over 17 times but I'm not ready to talk to him - TBoss speaks on Kemen, AY's joke & Abati's controversial article

Big Brother Naija's third runner up, Tokunbo Idowu aka TBoss was a guest on Rubbing Minds yesterday and she spoke on some of the controversies surrounding her, her fellow housemate Kemen, AY the comedian's joke about her and Kemen and Reuben Abati's article.

During the interview, Tboss disclosed that Kemen has been calling her over 17 times since she returned to Nigeria but she isn't ready to speak with him.

TBoss says although they have met a few times at functions, she isn't ready to speak with him. She added that she felt violated by Kemen's action. "I considered Kemen a friend.

He was my go-to guy. He was my buddy, my muscle. He encouraged me. He motivated me. So for what happened to have happened considering all the people that look up to me, it was sad. I was angry. I was humilated and I did feel violated but I don't play the victim card. I honestly think that the decision that Big Brother took was the only decision that could have been taken. And everything that Kemen has to say about that, na him get him mouth, e fit use am talk wetin him wan talk but he knows and we know".

Asked if she has seen him since she came out of the house, TBoss replied
"I have seen him a few times but I really don't want to talk to him because honestly the day you (Ebuka) came into the house with Karen, I was thinking what would happen if I see Kemen because I thought there would be a party after then. I just wanted to slap him. I think I even said that but then I came out and I said you know what everyone can make mistake because I am an attractive person but then, I come out and I hear the interviews he has given, today he makes an apology and then tomorrow he comes out to say TBoss knows what happened and that if there was no N25 million involved, hopefully she would tell the truth. What truth are you talking about? You are contradicting yourself. And then you are calling me? He has called me like over 15-20 times but I don't want to speak to him. I am not ready because if I talk, I would say the wrong things.

I want to calm down". On AY's joke, TBoss says
"I totally feel it was insensitive of him. It was very insensitive because like I said, I have a lot to say. Everyone who watched the show knows I am a very emotional person and I am very sensitive and this is not something that can be overlooked or joked about. I see the comments. I sneak into my Instagram and see the comments and I am like look, you are a female. This could have happened to you. This probably has happened to you. This incident was on camera. People saw it and people still chose to make light of this situation and make a joke out of it. If I consent to you touching me, that doesn't mean I consent to you kissing me or going the extra mile. if you do that to me on international tv and someone out there feels it is content for a joke, its unfair. You do not have to have a daughter or a sister or any female that is close to you for you to know that what went down was not ok. You just made a mockery of my emotions and my pain. That was insensitive".

On Reuben Abati's article, TBoss said
"That was sad, that was just sad. Coming from someone of that calibre". TBoss maintained that if she won the N25 million, it would have finished in a week given all the things she would use it for. She said she had planned to take her mum on an all expense paid holiday, get her dad something lovely, give her five god-children good education and then if anything is left of it, she would buy herself a Chanel bag.
