Real Madrid 3-0 Atletico Madrid: Magnificent Cristiano Ronaldo fires another Champions League hat-trick

Cristiano Ronaldo scored all three of Real Madrid's goal as the holders set themselves on course for the Champions League final with a commanding first leg win over local rivals Atletico.

The Portuguese forward took his tally of Champions League goals to 103 in an outstanding individual display at the Santiago Bernabeu. Ronaldo's close-range header from Casemiro's volleyed cross gave the hosts a first-half lead after just nine minutes and Madrid were to take advantage in the second period as Diego Simeone's side chased an away goal.

A bold counter on 72 minutes was ended by a powerful volley from Madrid's all-time record scorer, whose hat- trick, a 42nd for Los Merengues, was assured soon after as he was on hand to turn home Lucas Vazquez's cutback from close range.

Atletico now face a huge task to overturn the three goal deficit at the Vicente Calderon on May 10 in what will be the stadium's penultimate game.

No side has retained the Champions League trophy under its current structure but Zinedine Zidane's men look well- placed to reach the final a year after beating Atletico on penalties.

If Real Madrid enter final, they will face the winners of the tie between Juventus and Monaco, whose first leg is tomorrow.
