Suburban Philadelphia pastor Jacob Malone on Friday pleaded guilty to institutional sex assault, corruption of minors and child endangerment Malone and prosecutors had reached earlier plea deal that called for a 2-4 year jail term, but the judge rejected it as too lenient Victim, now 20, told police the sexual assault began in fall 2014, when she was 17 and living with Malone, his wife and three children She said the father-of-three, who was her guardian, gave her alcohol twice when she turned 18 and molested her once when she became drunk

Jacob Malone, a married pastor from suburban Philadelphia has pleaded guilty to sexually assaulting and impregnating a teenager who lived with his family and has been sentenced to three to six years in prison.

Jacob Malone, 35, of Exton, learned his fate on Friday after entering guilty pleas to counts of institutional sex assault, corruption of minors and child endangerment.

He also must register as a sex offender for 15 years and undergo court- mandated sex counseling.

Malone and prosecutors had reached an earlier plea deal that called for a two-year minimum jail term, but Judge Jacqueline Cody rejected that deal as too lenient a month ago.

Malone, who is married and has three young children, was working at Calvary Fellowship, a nondenominational church in Downingtown, when authorities say he began sexually assaulting the girl in the fall of 2014, when she was 17 years old.

She gave birth a year ago to their daughter. The young woman, now aged 20, maintained that Malone took advantage of her 'mentally, physically, spiritually' while acting as her guardian.

When given a chance to speak in court, Malone admitted he gave the girl alcohol but said the sexual encounters were consensual.

He apologized, saying his 'failures and weaknesses' had hurt her, her family, and his family.

'I wept over President Buhari’s health' - former Osun state governor, Bisi Akande says

Former Osun state governor and one of the founding fathers of APC, Bisi Akande, has expressed concern over President Buhari's failing health.

In a statement released yesterday, Akande said President Buhari's absence at the wedding of Tunde Sabiu, Buhari's adopted son and PA, over the weekend, made him weep, knowing that his ailment caused him not to attend such an important occasion.

Akande stated that last December when he saw President Buhari, he complained of his stressed look.

“The health of the leader is intricately intertwined with the health of the nation. It is more so in a delicately fragile union of nations called Nigeria. I did not see President Buhari at the wedding of his adopted son in Kaduna, last Saturday. I was sad and I wept. When last we met at the wedding of his daughter in Abuja, last December, I complained to him that I was not happy about his stressful looks. His reply connoted some allusions to circumstances where an honest man fighting corruption is surrounded mostly by unpatriotic greedy ruling class. He felt painfully frustrated. He assured me he would soon be going on vacation. I then knew that corruption has effectively been fighting back. And I prayed for Nigeria. That was why Asiwaju Bola Tinubu and I rushed to meet him in London in February this year when he was sick and could not return as scheduled from his vacation. The rest is history but we must appreciate that his poor health is already taking a toll on the health of Nigeria as a polity. There are two challenges facing the country today. The first and most critical is the health of the President which, unfortunately, is a development beyond his control and for which we did not prepare. The second is the disorder and lack of cohesion between the National Assembly and the Presidency. These are two great red flag dangers that have the potential of plunging the country into unprecedented chaos and of destabilising the gains of democracy since 1999. The greatest danger, however, is for political interests at the corridor of power attempting to feast on the health of Mr President in a dangerous manner that may aggravate the problems between the Executive and the National Assembly without realizing if, in the end, it could drag the entire country into avoidable doom. “As delicately fragile the Union of Nations making up Nigeria, so delicately fragile the democracy and the rule of laws governing the polity of the Union called Nigerian Federation. Certain Nigerian leaders, having been blindfolded by corruption, assume the possibility of using money in manipulating the national security agencies to intimidate, suppress and hold down certain ethnic nationalities or playing one ethnic nationality against the other with a view to undermining the constitution and perversely upturning the rule of law. To avoid the ugly consequences of letting President Buhari’s ailments throw Nigeria into confusion, I am urging all Nigerians to begin to pray for his divine healing and perfect recovery. Let me warn today that those who wish to harvest political gains out of the health of the President are mistaken. This is not Nigeria of 1993. We are in a new national and global era of constitutionality and order. We hope Nigerians have enough patience to learn from history. My greatest fear, however, is that the country should not be allowed to slide into anarchy and disorder of a monumental proportion.”he said

Prophet arrested for taking N70m, three houses to cure fibroids

The police in Lagos have commenced an investigation into a case involving one Oladele , 45, a prophet at a church in Oke Ira, in the Ogba area of the state.

The police at the Special Fraud Unit , Ikoyi , said the prophet was being held for allegedly defrauding a businesswoman of N70m, a duplex , two five - bedroomed bungalows, a Lexus and a Toyota Highlander, 2014 mode.

We learnt that the woman’s ordeal began sometime in 2007 after she was told by a medical doctor that her womb would have to be removed to heal her of fibroids.

She was said to have rejected the doctor's advice and resorted to a desperate search for an alternative solution, during which she was introduced to the prophet.

The woman, who was 43 years old at the time he met Oladele , had reportedly been battling with the ailment for 14 years, which made her to bleed from her private parts.

It was gathered that the 45-year-old prophet promised to make the fibrous tissue disappear and gave her some concoctions after collecting N98,000 for the service.

The bleeding was said to have stopped. However, the victim’s excitement was short-lived when the bleeding recurred two weeks after and she returned to the prophet .

It was said that Oladele subsequently started coming up with different gimmicks to extort money from the woman, including a claim that her husband was after her life and those of her three children.

A senior police officer at the SFU said, “The woman is from a prominent family in Lagos State and she is a businesswoman. She had fibroids for 14 years and was driven from pillars to posts, looking for healing.

Eventually in 2007 , she met a woman who introduced her to the prophet. “ The prophet told her that her husband was the cause of the heavy blood flowed. He said the husband wanted to kill her and that as long as the blood flows, the husband would continue to make more money.

He said the husband had to be eliminated for her to live well . He also told her to bring her children – two females and a male – for spiritual cleansing , saying their lives were also in danger.

“He gave the children some concoctions. He lived in the woman’ s house in Ogba with her children whenever the husband was not around. By this time, he had taken control of the woman and her children.

At a point, he told the woman to build a five -bedroomed duplex for him at Ijoko (Ogun State ), which she did within three months. She also purchased a Toyota Highlander, 2014 model , and a Lexus GX470, 2013 model, for him.

” It was learnt that the woman's son ran mad a few years ago after taking some herb from the prophet. It was learnt that Oladele took the boy to his town in Ado Ekiti, Ekiti State , where he was healed.

“He told the woman that she must build two five bed - roomed bungalows for him in Ado Ekiti so that her son madness would not return . After she built the houses, he told the woman to stop having sex with her husband if she wanted to live long.

“The woman made several transfers into his three bank accounts . We have been able to get records of the transfers to one of his banks which ran into over N70m , ” the source added.

Thomasloaded gathered that luck ran out on the prophet sometime in March when it dawned on one of the woman’s children, a lawyer , that the family was being defrauded after he allegedly collected another millions of naira from her for spiritual cleansing .

Another investigator at the SFU said , “ The lawyer informed their father and the case was reported to the police . The prophet was arrested in Ado Ekiti, where he had gone to obtain a chieftaincy title .” An official of the SFU, SP Ngozi Braide , who spoke on the incident on behalf of the unit’ s Commissioner of Police , Ibrahim Lamorde, said the suspect confessed to the fraud.

She said, “ We have been able to trace about N70m to his bank account . In his statement , he said he healed the woman of the fibroids .” In the prophet’ s statement to the police , he said the houses and the two vehicles were gifts the woman gave him.

He said he did not use charms on her and her children. The man also told investigators that he gave some money to the woman that introduced the victim to her . Braide said the police had launched a manhunt for the accomplice , adding that the prophet had been granted administrative bail and would be charged to court after the completion of investigation.

“ We urge members of the public to be wary of people who devise various means of defrauding them of their hard -earned money. Be careful about the kind of people you seek help from , ” Braide added.

'Kemen has called me over 17 times but I'm not ready to talk to him - TBoss speaks on Kemen, AY's joke & Abati's controversial article

Big Brother Naija's third runner up, Tokunbo Idowu aka TBoss was a guest on Rubbing Minds yesterday and she spoke on some of the controversies surrounding her, her fellow housemate Kemen, AY the comedian's joke about her and Kemen and Reuben Abati's article.

During the interview, Tboss disclosed that Kemen has been calling her over 17 times since she returned to Nigeria but she isn't ready to speak with him.

TBoss says although they have met a few times at functions, she isn't ready to speak with him. She added that she felt violated by Kemen's action. "I considered Kemen a friend.

He was my go-to guy. He was my buddy, my muscle. He encouraged me. He motivated me. So for what happened to have happened considering all the people that look up to me, it was sad. I was angry. I was humilated and I did feel violated but I don't play the victim card. I honestly think that the decision that Big Brother took was the only decision that could have been taken. And everything that Kemen has to say about that, na him get him mouth, e fit use am talk wetin him wan talk but he knows and we know".

Asked if she has seen him since she came out of the house, TBoss replied
"I have seen him a few times but I really don't want to talk to him because honestly the day you (Ebuka) came into the house with Karen, I was thinking what would happen if I see Kemen because I thought there would be a party after then. I just wanted to slap him. I think I even said that but then I came out and I said you know what everyone can make mistake because I am an attractive person but then, I come out and I hear the interviews he has given, today he makes an apology and then tomorrow he comes out to say TBoss knows what happened and that if there was no N25 million involved, hopefully she would tell the truth. What truth are you talking about? You are contradicting yourself. And then you are calling me? He has called me like over 15-20 times but I don't want to speak to him. I am not ready because if I talk, I would say the wrong things.

I want to calm down". On AY's joke, TBoss says
"I totally feel it was insensitive of him. It was very insensitive because like I said, I have a lot to say. Everyone who watched the show knows I am a very emotional person and I am very sensitive and this is not something that can be overlooked or joked about. I see the comments. I sneak into my Instagram and see the comments and I am like look, you are a female. This could have happened to you. This probably has happened to you. This incident was on camera. People saw it and people still chose to make light of this situation and make a joke out of it. If I consent to you touching me, that doesn't mean I consent to you kissing me or going the extra mile. if you do that to me on international tv and someone out there feels it is content for a joke, its unfair. You do not have to have a daughter or a sister or any female that is close to you for you to know that what went down was not ok. You just made a mockery of my emotions and my pain. That was insensitive".

On Reuben Abati's article, TBoss said
"That was sad, that was just sad. Coming from someone of that calibre". TBoss maintained that if she won the N25 million, it would have finished in a week given all the things she would use it for. She said she had planned to take her mum on an all expense paid holiday, get her dad something lovely, give her five god-children good education and then if anything is left of it, she would buy herself a Chanel bag.

Over 400 Fulani Christian converts tasked on peace

Over 400 Fulani Christian converts have been tasked on preaching the gospel of peace to their kindred in order to reduce the prevailing crises in the country. Rev. Copper Sebok, Reverend in charge of COCIN Church Panyam, gave the charge on Sunday at the end of a 3-day conference organised for all Fulani converts of all denominations across the country.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the conference was aimed at awakening the need for preaching peace to their fellow brothers and sisters across the country.

“The conference is also a re-union service for all Fulani converts regardless of their denominations and to share experiences and encourage one another in the propagation of the gospel of peace.

“It is a concept of COCIN 43 years ago, and to debunk the notion that Fulani’s are nomadic and can’t be reached with the gospel of Christ.’

In his sermon, read from Matt 9: 35-38, the clergy said man must have compassion on the unsaved to draw them to Christ for eternal salvation.

He decried the level of crises in Nigeria which usually resulted to loss of lives and property, adding that Nigerians must embrace peace for the progress and development of the nation. Rev. Hassan Mohammed, who spoke on behalf of the converts, expressed gratitude to God for giving them a new lease of life as Christians.

He disclosed that the conference was an eye opener for them to go and proclaim the gospel not only to their kindred but to all nations. “We have a total of seven Fulani people ordained Reverends beside other Pastors and Evangelists and we are doing our best to enlighten our brothers and sisters about Christianity,’’ Mohammed said.

He thanked the organizers of the conference and appealed to both Christians and Muslim to continue to pray for the peace of the country.

Turkey sacks 3,900 public officials, bans TV dating shows in latest purge.

Turkey has sacked almost 3,900 people from the civil service and the military, in the second major purge since President Erdogan was granted sweeping new powers.

It appears to be the latest crackdown linked to last July’s failed coup, after the government announced the officials had been fired for suspected links to ‘terrorist organisations and structures presenting a threat to national security’.

In a separate decree, TV dating shows were banned. It comes after the Deputy prime minister said the shows were at odds with Turkey’s faith and culture.

Earlier in the day, internet users found they couldn’t access Wikipedia, after the government blocked it citing a law allowing it to ban access to websites deemed obscene or a threat to national security.

“Thousands of internet users are facing the AK Party’s bans. If this is terrorism related, you can change the context (of an article) but they prefer to block the website completely.

This was done with YouTube and Twitter before and now it is Wikipedia. But they will see this is the wrong approach and I believe this will be reversed.”

The move comes after Erdogan narrowly won a referendum to grant him new powers, something which opponents feared would see the country lurch towards authoritarianism.

Syria: airstrike in Hama kills 8 White Helmets rescuers

Saturday’s aerial attack is one of the deadliest against volunteers, who are often targeted by regime airstrikes.

Airstrikes struck a centre of Syria’s rescuers known as the White Helmets in a rebel-held area in the country’s centre, killing eight volunteers, opposition activists said.

Saturday’s airstrike was one of the deadliest against the rescuers who operate in opposition-held areas and who have garnered world attention for operating in extreme conditions, pulling survivors out of recently struck areas.

The volunteers have often been targeted by government airstrikes, in what are known as ‘double tap’ attacks, as they work to rescue others.

The local White Helmets in the central Hama province said an air raid on one of their centres in Kfar Zeita killed eight members of the team.

The group said five bodies were lifted from the rubble and the rescuers continued to look for the others.

Death toll may spurt: monitor The Britain-based opposition monitoring group, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, has said the number of those killed is likely to rise as the search mission continues. It was not clear who carried out the airstrikes, as Syrian government and Russia aircraft have targeted opposition- held areas.

The central Hama province have been scene to intense violence in recent weeks, as the government attempts to push back a rebel offensive.

IS attack repelled Separately on Saturday, Syria’s military said its troops and allied fighters repelled an attack by the Islamic State group on a strategic area held by the government in southern Aleppo province.
.The attack took place in Khanaser, south-east Aleppo — a strategic region that links Aleppo with central and western Syria. The area has changed hands many times during the conflict. But last year, government troops and allied fighters wrested control of Khanaser from the IS.

The military media arm said the IS attacked Um Mayyal village near a mountain range in Khanaser and other areas.

Many casualties
The Observatory said IS fighters launched the attack on military posts in the area, triggering intense clashes and leaving many casualties. IS-affiliated Aamaq news agency claimed the barbaric group’s fighters killed 30 government soldiers in the attack. Near the capital, hundreds of Syrians from the rebel- held suburbs of eastern Ghouta near Damascus protested against infighting between the insurgent groups that began on Friday and left dozens killed in the area.

The infighting came amid an intensified government offensive in the area near Damascus, which the rebels have controlled for years but has been increasingly squeezed by government advances. “God rid us of all leaders” “God rid us of all leaders,” the protesters chanted, criticising the head of the insurgent groups for diverting their weapons from the front line with the government.

The infighting is pitting the powerful Army of Islam group against al-Rahman Corps and al-Qaeda-linked group — the Levant Liberation Committee, or Hayat Tahrir al-Sham. Each side blames the other for triggering the fighting in the power struggle over control of eastern Ghouta.

Some activists have called on Army of Islam to rid eastern Ghouta of the powerful al-Qaeda-linked group. The Observatory said shots were fired at the protesters in one area, leaving five injured.

38 insurgents killed?
In 24 hours of fighting, the Observatory said at least 38 insurgents from the warring sides were killed. Damascus-based Shaam News Network put the number at 60, in addition to six civilians killed because of the clashes.

For the past three years, the government has been unable to regain control of the eastern suburbs of Damascus. But in recent weeks, an intensified offensive points to a new determination to retake the area.

On Saturday, activists reported a heavy air campaign against the area’s Qaboun neighbourhood.

I’ll soon give true account of 2015 election — Jonathan

Former President Goodluck Jonathan has dismissed claims by respondents in a book written by the Chairman of the Editorial Board of ThisDay, Mr. Segun Adeniyi.

Jonathan, who stated this in his twitter handle on Saturday , faulted claims by respondents in the book , “ Against the Run of Play. ” He said many of those that responded to issues surrounding the 2015 presidential election made distorted claims.

He said, “ I have just read Segun Adeniyi's new book , ‘ Against the Run of Play’ which has so far enjoyed tremendous reviews in the media. My take on it is that the book as presented, contains many distorted claims on the 2015 presidential election by many of the respondents “ There will obviously be more books like that on this subject by concerned Nigerians.

However, I believe that at the right time, the main characters in the election including myself will come out with a true account of what transpired either in major interviews or books.

” Among respondents in the book are former President Olusegun Obasanjo ; ex-Senate President , Senator David Mark ; Borno State Governor , Kashim Shettima ; a former Niger Governor , Babangida Aliyu and the Minister of Transportation , Rotimi Amaechi.

Mark was reported to have said that he envisaged Jonathan's defeat and even warned him but all warnings fell on deaf ears . On his part , Obasanjo said he warned Jonathan against running and also alleged that the ex-President used Boko Haram problem to rape the treasury.

He further said Jonathan was incompetent and was too small for the presidency from the outset.

Shettima said Jonathan only called me once for a meeting over Boko Haram . He lamented that Jonathan was not committed to the efforts to fight Boko Haram insurgency in the North -East. On his part , Aliyu said if Jonathan had not reneged on his promise not to pursue a second term , Peoples Democratic Party would not have lost .

The ex -Rivers State Governor , Amaechi , attributed the cause of his grudge with Jonathan to illegal and excess deduction from the federation account by the former president. He said, “I could not surrender my mandate to a woman (Patience ) in Abuja, even if such a person was the wife of the President.

That basically was my sin with Dame Patience Jonathan .” Polls, a credit to Nigerians — UK Meanwhile , the United Kingdom has denied an allegation by Jonathan that it supported President Muhammadu Buhari during the 2015 presidential election.

The UK High Commission, in a statement on Saturday by its Press and Public Affairs Officer, Joe Abuku , said the 2015 elections were a credit to Nigerians. It said, “ Prior to the 2015 elections in Nigeria, the UK engaged with Nigerian political parties and their leaders to urge them to run a fair, non - violent campaign and allow Nigerian voters to decide who their future political leadership would be.

“ The UK congratulated President Jonathan on having handed over power peacefully in 2015 having lost the Nigerian presidential election.

The elections were a credit to the Nigerian people and a truly historic moment for Nigerian democracy.
This process further strengthened Nigeria’s democratic tradition . “

The United Kingdom welcomes the assessment of independent observers , including the EU , that Nigeria’ s elections were largely peaceful and conducted in accordance with recognised international democratic norms, and that there was no evidence of systemic manipulation of the process .”

Philippine leader says N Korea 'wants to end world'

Rodrigo Duterte says North Korean leader Kim wants to 'finish everything' and 'drag us all down' in a nuclear war.

Philippine president warns US President Trump not to play games North Korean leader Kim Jong-un.

Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte on Saturday urged the United States to show restraint after North Korea's latest missile test and to avoid playing into the hands of leader Kim Jong-un, who "wants to end the world".

Tensions between the US and the North have risen sharply in recent weeks as a series of North Korean missile tests have prompted dire warnings from President Donald Trump's administration about curtailing its nuclear weapons programme.

US officials have repeatedly warned "all options are on the table" - including military strikes - to curb the North's nuclear ambitions.

North Korea has responded by threatening to sink the aircraft carrier and launch nuclear attacks on the US' regional allies South Korea and Japan. North Korea conducts another ballistic-missile test.

The notoriously blunt Duterte said the Southeast Asia region was extremely worried about tensions between the United States and North Korea, and said one misstep would be a "catastrophe" and Asia would be the first victim of a nuclear war.

The United States, Japan, South Korea and China, he said, were sparring with a man who was excited about the prospect of firing missiles. Duterte is current chairman of the Association of South East Asian Nations (ASEAN) and was to speak by telephone to US President Donald Trump later on Saturday.

He said he would urge Trump not to get into a confrontation with Kim. "There seems to be two countries playing with their toys and those toys are not really to entertain," he told a news conference after the ASEAN summit in Manila, referring to Washington and Pyongyang.

"You know that they are playing with somebody who relishes letting go of missiles and everything. I would not want to go into his [Kim's] mind because I really do not know what's inside but he's putting Mother Earth, the planet to an edge." North Korea test-fired a ballistic missile on Saturday shortly after US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson warned that failure to curb Pyongyang's nuclear and ballistic missile programmes could lead to "catastrophic consequences".

U.S and South Korean officials said the test appeared to have failed, in what would be the North's fourth straight unsuccessful missile test since March.

"Immediately after the aircraft carrier arrived in the Sea of Japan, South Korea and the US strike forces launched a drill from 6:00pm [09:00GMT]," a defence ministry spokesman told AFP news agency.

Trump fears ‘major conflict’ with North Korea The drill aimed to verify the allies' capability to track and intercept enemy ballistic missiles, he said. He declined to clarify how long the drill would last, but Yonhap news agency said it was expected to continue until sometime next week.

The manoeuvres will also include a live-fire exercise and anti-submarine exercises, the spokesman added.

Duterte said it was incumbent upon the United States as the responsible country to not rise to Kim's provocations. He said he was sure Trump had cautioned his military not to allow the situation to spiral out of control. "Who am I to say that you should stop? But I would say 'Mr President, please see to it that there is no war because my region will suffer immensely,'" Duterte said.

"I will just communicate to [Trump], 'just let him play ... do not play into his hands'." He added: "The guy [Kim] simply wants to end the world, that is why he is very happy. He is always smiling. But he really wants to finish everything and he wants to drag us all down."

Donald Trump praises his first 100 days in office

President Donald Trump has described his first 100 days in office as an "incredible journey" during a speech at a rally in the state of Pennsylvania.

He used the same speech on Saturday to attack the news media and praise his own accomplishments. Delivering the speech in Harrisburg, which he had chosen to attend over the black-tie gala White House Correspondents' Dinner in Washington, DC, Trump began by launching a fresh attack on the news media.

"A large group of Hollywood actors and Washington media are consoling themselves in a hotel ballroom in our nation's capital right now," he said.

"Media outlets like CNN and MSNBC are fake news, and they would love to be with us here tonight, but they're trapped at the [White House Correspondents'] dinner which will be very very boring."

A brief look at Trump's first 100 days in office, Trump is the first president in 36 years not to attend the annual tradition at which White House officials mingle with members of the press corps and Hollywood celebrities.

Trump, however, said he was "thrilled to be more than 100 miles from Washington" to discuss the "great journey" of his first 100 days in office.
Pennsylvania was critical to Trump's victory. He won the state with 48 percent of the vote, the first time the state had voted for a Republican presidential candidate since George HW Bush in 1988.

Trump said some of his achievements during this phase of his term were the appointment of Neil Gorsuch to the Supreme Court, the decision to withdraw from the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) trade deal and ending offshoring to "bring back American jobs".

"The TPP would have been a tremendous disaster for our country," he said.

Trump also used the speech to hint that the US was planning to withdraw from the Paris climate change agreement.

"I'll be making a big decision on the Paris accord over the next two weeks, and we'll see what happens," he said. Meanwhile, several thousand people marched from the Capitol to the White House in Washington, DC in protest against the Trump administration's energy policy.

Thousands protest Trump's climate policies According to the organisers, similar protests were taking place in 300 towns and cities across the country.

At the 100-day mark, opinion polls show that Trump's supporters during the campaign remain largely loyal.

Though the White House created a website lauding its accomplishments of the first 100 days, Trump has tried to play down the importance of the marker.

"It's a false standard, 100 days," Trump said while signing an executive order on Friday, "but I have to tell you, I don't think anybody has done what we've been able to do in 100 days, so we're very happy."

Trump is turning to what he is describing as the nation's biggest tax cut. It apparently falls short of Reagan's in 1981, and tax experts are sceptical that the plan would pay for itself.

The economy, so far, has been Trump's ally. Polls show that Americans feel slightly better about his job performance on that subject than his job performance overall.

The Correspondents' Dinner this year had fewer Hollywood celebrities in attendance. Television networks even invited behind-the-scenes employees. White House reporters noted seeing more colleagues in the room than in recent years.

Organisers said they were focusing on the main purpose of the dinner, honouring journalists for their work and awarding scholarships to students.

Bob Woodward, the veteran Washington Post journalist who with Carl Bernstein broke the Watergate scandal in 1972, addressed Trump's criticism of the media.

"Mr President: The media is not fake news," Woodward said. Addressing fellow journalists, he said: "Whatever the climate, we should and must persist and I believe we will."

Traditionally the US president holds a humorous speech at the event in which he pokes fun at the media, politicians and even himself, and a hired comedian also mocks the president. "We are here to celebrate the press, not the presidency," Jeff Mason, the White House Correspondents' Association president, said.
