Poverty, unemployment, getting worse, says Atiku

Former Vice -President Atiku Abubakar says Nigeria is currently at a crossroads as poverty, unemployment, inflation, infant mortality and other social vices are on the increase.

He, therefore, called on Nigerians to unite in the demand for true federalism. Atiku said this while delivering his speech at the formal public presentation of the Daily Stream newspaper in Abuja on Thursday.

He said , “ A huge pall of pessimism hangs over a section of the citizenry , and the ranks of those who harbour real doubt about the future of the country swell by the day.“

The country is truly at a crossroads , and things are made worse by the cocktail of economic , social and political problems which we have had to contend with, and which add to the abysmally low estimation of our country even by its own citizens .”

The former Vice- President recalled that life was better in the First Republic because each region was allowed to grow at its own pace while the Federal Government was weaker.

Atiku , however, noted that following the creation of states, the Federal Government became very powerful while the federating units became poor, thereby, deepening poverty among the populace He added, “ Our beloved country has been in the throes of severe and debilitating social and economic problems.

Virtually all the development indices have not been favourable : massive and pervasive poverty , double- digit inflation, unemployment, dwindling foreign exchange receipts, poor GDP growth rates, high infant and maternal mortality , high levels of illiteracy , and millions of school-age children out of school.”

Atiku said the many problems facing the nation were already threatening the unity and the existence of the country . He, therefore, urged Nigerians to come together to renegotiate the terms of our union.

The former vice -president said no leader could make far- reaching positive changes in the country except the current political structure is changed. He added, “ To be sure , good leaders do make a difference in the fortunes of countries.

However , leaders operate within structural constraints imposed by constitutions , laws and regulations and the local and world economy.

But the most germane question we need to ask ourselves is : must we really continue to live together as one country amidst such a pervasive climate of disunity, which is impeding our development ?

“ My prompt answer to this is yes , we should remain together because it is the best option, and because we will be stronger , greater , and better in one piece than in pieces.”

Attempts to get reactions of President Muhammadu Buhari’ s spokesman, Mr. Femi Adesina, did not succeed. He had not responded to an email and an SMS sent to him as of the time of sending this report.

PDP, CLO attack President Buhari over decision to work from home

President Muhammadu Buhari John Alechenu, Olusola Fabiyi, Olalekan Adetayo and Olaleye Aluko The Peoples Democratic Party and Civil Liberties Organisation have criticised President Muhammdu Buhari’s decision to perform his official roles from home.

Buhari was absent from a meeting of the Federal Executive Council inside the Council Chambers of the Presidential Villa, Abuja , on Wednesday. Buhari did not also attend the FEC meeting last week, with the Presidency attributing his absence to the Easter holiday.

Following the President Buhari’s absence from Wednesday's meeting , the Minister of Information and Culture , Alhaji Lai Mohammed, said Buhari was working from home . In a statement , Mohammed said the President only decided to work from home on Wednesday, not that he had decided to work from home henceforth.

The minister said , “ He ( the President) wanted to rest today and he asked the VP to preside over today's meeting . “ In addition , he also asked that all his files be taken home to him and he will be working from home today .’’ But the PDP kicked against the development, urging the Presidency to reveal Buhari’ s health status.

Spokesman for the party’s National Caretaker Committee , Prince Dayo Adeyeye , stated the party's position in an interview in Abuja on Wednesday. Adeyeye said it was obvious that Mohammed did not know what to tell Nigerians following the third consecutive absence of the President from the weekly FEC meeting.

“ We had such and similar experience during the days of the late former President Umaru Yar’ Adua, when his health status was being manipulated by a cabal within the Presidency.

We should be allowed to forget that era. “ President Buhari is human like any other person and is liable to fall sick as well . “ But he was elected to a public office and he is occupying a public office.

He cannot therefore claim to be working behind the curtains . “ He is not allowed to work secretly because he was not elected to work secretly.

FEC is statutory and he must preside over it .” The CLO said it was conflicting that Buhari, who was reported to be resting at home , would attend to files on national issues.

The CLO President, Igho Akeregha, said the President should resign if his health could not sustain the pressure of work, adding that Nigerians would still respect him for his “ ardent fight against corruption .” He stated , “ This is a fraudulent setup that the APC government is taking Nigerians through.

The information minister said the President wanted to rest and asked the VP to stand in for him . At another time, the minister said the President had asked for files to be brought to him at home . Now what time does a man who wants to rest indeed have to start working on files ?

“ Why is the President continuously missing the very important Federal Executive Council meeting ?
The conclusion to all of these is that this is a butterfly regime that flies around and lies to Nigerians.“

Nigerians voted for change and these individuals, including Mr President, have shown that they are not ready to govern. “ The way out is that the President should resign and Nigerians will have a big place in history for him as a man who came and vehemently challenged corruption. “ But hanging around office and trying to protect the cabal is not good for the country.

You cannot run a country in this manner.” But All Progressives Congress governors say they are not worried about Buhari’ s health yet.

Kaduna State Governor Nasir el-Rufai said this while responding to questions from reporters at the party ’s National Secretariat in Abuja on Wednesday. El -Rufai spoke on behalf of the 20 APC governors, who attended a meeting with the Chief John Odigie -Oyegun - led National Working Committee.

I’m not harassing your family, Buhari tells Jonathan

President Muhammadu Buhari on Wednesday said he was not harassing the family of former President Goodluck Jonathan or any other persons in his administration’ s ongoing fight against corruption as claimed by the former President.

He said anybody who did not have skeleton in his or her cupboard had nothing to fear about the ongoing anti-graft war.

Buhari said this in a statement by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Mr. Femi Adesina, while reacting to an allegation credited to Jonathan in a book “ Against The Run of Play ”, written by the Chairman of ThisDayEditorial Board, Mr. Olusegun Adeniyi , that his family was being harassed by the present government.

The former President was also quoted to have disagreed with the style being used by the present administration in fighting corruption.

Buhari said given the scale of revelations and recoveries so far by the anti-corruption agencies , it was obvious that corruption had “ an uninhibited course during our recent past.”

While saying he was resolute in the fight, the President said time would give the verdict on whose style of fighting corruption ultimately yielded the most dividends.

Jonathan Goodluck, from beginning, was too small for the Presidency – Says Obasanjo

The former President Olusegun Obasanjo has said that former President Goodluck Jonathan from his first days as President showed he was too small for the office, saying he, Obasanjo, acted more as an opponent of Jonathan than a supporter of Muhammadu Buhari ahead of the 2015 presidential poll.

Ex President Jonathan and Gen. Obasanjo (Rtd) Obasanjo, who said Jonathan deceived him that he would not give Mrs. Diezani Allison-Madueke the petroleum portfolio in his cabinet was deceived into believing that he could use money to buy the 2015 presidential election.

Obasanjo in the book, Against the Run of Play: How an Incumbent President was defeated in Nigeria, written by former presidential spokesman, Segun Adeniyi, also revealed that Jonathan was gripped by the fear that Buhari, as president, would jail him or lead him to an early grave.

In the 204-page book, former President Jonathan is himself quoted as saying he could not be held accountable for provocative remarks made by some of his supporters, even as former Senate President, David Mark, is also quoted in the book as alleging that he forewarned the former president about the alleged conspiracy against him in the north but to no avail.

Problems of minority agitation Obasanjo in the book is quoted as saying that following Umaru Yar’Adua’s death in 2010, he endorsed Jonathan for the 2011 presidential election principally to solve the problems of minority agitation in Nigeria.

The former President said: “I saw the emergence of Jonathan as an opportunity to solve the problem of minority agitation. The three majority ethnic groups in Nigeria can always sort themselves out but not so for the minority.

A good example is my state here in Ogun. “Despite the best of intentions, nobody from Ogun West has been able to become governor because of this minority issue and it will take a conscious effort to make it happen. So, it was in the context of that I had to plead with prominent people in the North to allow Jonathan run for a term.”

I warned Jonathan not to make Diezani petroleum minister but in a tone laden with regrets, Obasanjo pointed out that there were certain things Jonathan did that fell below his expectations as a former president.

“There were certain decisions taken by Jonathan very early in his administration that pointed to the fact that the office was bigger than him and one of them was the appointment of a petroleum minister,” he said. According to Obasanjo, he cautioned Jonathan not to appoint Diezani Alison-Madueke to such a sensitive sector but the president ignored his counsel. “Jonathan gave me the impression that he was not going to give her the portfolio but at the end he did and we can see the consequence.

He, of course, knew what he was doing,” Obasanjo stated. Why I opposed Jonathan the former president also hinted at what riled him against Jonathan and why he parted ways with him in the run up to the 2015 election, a development which has given the impression that he was actively working in support of Buhari’s candidature.

But Obasanjo denied any direct support to Buhari. He said: “I didn’t join them in supporting Buhari; I joined in opposing Jonathan so Buhari was just a beneficiary of my opposition to Jonathan since my position was AOBJ: meaning Any Option But Jonathan.”, Obasanjo explained that Jonathan and his handlers believed that they could buy the last election and that they were so arrogant about it that the PDP would print only one nomination form for him and him alone.

He said: “If he was wise, he would have yielded the ticket to somebody else in the PDP.” Jonathan was not really afraid about life after office but Buhari the former president, who also criticised the role played by the military in the last election, said he suspected that Jonathan was not really afraid about life after office but Buhari, his successor.

“I believe the President’s concern or fear is not about life after office , because he and I have had occasions to talk about this both seriously and jovially.

I believe the President’s fear is particularly motivated by the person he sees as his likely successor, that is General Buhari.

I believe the people would have been telling him that Buhari is a hard man; he would fight corruption and he (Jonathan) may end up in jail if not in the grave,” Obasanjo narrated in the book.

The book also placed the defeat of Jonathan at the 2015 poll on the utterances of those close to the former president, chief among them being his wife, Patience.

The book recalls the allegation by former Niger State Governor, Babangida Aliyu, accusing the former first lady of insulting the North with incendiary language, thereby alienating them from Jonathan during the election.

It quoted Mrs. Jonathan as making a denigrating remark against Almajiri in the north, by saying “Our people no dey born children wey dem no dey count. Our men no dey born throw way for street; we no dey like people from the other side”, an apparent reference to the concept of Almajiri common in the north.

Reminded in the book that some persons close to him, especially Chief Edwin Clark and Asari Dokubo, were rather vocal and provocative in their utterances, Jonathan wondered why he should be held accountable for their personal opinions.

The former president retorted: “Okay, let us agree for the sake of argument that Chief Clark and the others were offensive, what about those from other ethnic groups who were also making incendiary statement about my person with insinuations about people who wear bowler hats? “I am not defending whoever may have crossed the line among Ijaw people but let us be fair, why should I be held accountable for that and you would not hold other leaders accountable for what politicians from their own ethnic groups also said? he queried.

On why Jonathan lost the election, former Senate President, David Mark, said that he saw the defeat coming and had pointed out the unrealistic voting projections made by the party about the North to the former president and the conspiracy against him but he was not taken seriously.

He said Jonathan should have seen the handwriting on the wall and done something about what was pointed out to him but no action was taken.

Mark lamented, “I saw it and at difference times, I pointed out to him and the party that the projections being made by some people around the president about what the voting pattern in the north would were wrong. “I could see the conspiracy and the gang-up building up in the north against the aspiration of Jonathan but my voice was drowned out by those who took it for granted that a sitting president, and one from PDP, could not lose,” Mark said.

The former Senate President also mentioned that the former Vice President, Namadi Sambo, was also aware that Jonathan was not strong in the North but apparently had little to say in the campaign to re-elect Jonathan. “Some people were deceiving the president with the kind of false scenarios they were painting for him. The VP could see the conspiracy but I don’t know how much influence he had on the campaign.

Why Jonathan couldn’t see it until it was too late is what i find difficult to understand,” Mark pointed out.

Tunji, who said this in a snapchat on Tuesday, said that some persons, who he did not name, eliminated his dad because they considered him a big threat to their ambition ahead of the next year election.

He said it was curious that his father, who was hale and hearty on Saturday preceding his sudden death and was awake till around 2am on Sunday morning, could die a few hours later without showing any sign of sickness.

Tunji believed that his dad was killed by those who were jealous of his influence and money which he said they wanted by all means .

His claim was not different from the position of many of Adeleke’s supporters, who said that their benefactor was poisoned at one of the social functions he attended within the state on Saturday.
