Nigeria's Electricity Grid Has Totally Collapsed

Nigeria’s power grid collapsed on Tuesday night, leading to widespread blackout across the country.

It was gathered that the collapse was due to a fire incident on the Escravos Lagos Pipeline System of the Nigerian Gas Processing and Transportation Company Limited.

The incident led to a shutdown of the pipeline that supplies gas to six thermal power plants resulting to the collapse of the country’s electricity grid.

This was confirmed by the Federal Ministry of Power, Works and Housing in a statement issued around 12:44am on Wednesday.

It said, “It is regrettable that after a sustained period of increasing production and distribution of power since September 2017 to date, the Nigerian Gas Processing and Transportation Company Ltd reported a fire incident on its Escravos Lagos Pipeline System near Okada, Edo State on Tuesday, January 2, 2018.

“The incident requires a shutdown of the pipeline supplying gas to Egbin 1,320megawatts; Olorunsogo NIPP 676MW; Olorunsogo 338MW; Omotosho NIPP 450MW; Omotosho 338 MW; and Paras 60MW power stations.

“The sudden loss of generation due to interruption in gas supply from these stations caused the national transmission grid to trip off around 20:20 on 2nd January 2018. The national transmission grid is owned and operated by the Transmission Company of Nigeria.”

Guardiola Warns Manchester City Players Are Going To Be “killed”

Following the English Premier League’s hectic schedule, Manchester City manager, Pep Guardiola, has expressed his concern that the players could be killed.

The manager was speaking after his side defeated Watford 3-1 on Tuesday night.

However, it was a bittersweet victory, as Kyle Walker became the latest player in the treatment room for the table toppers.

“We are going to check (the injury) out, he might have a little problem,” Guardiola told reporters when asked about Walker, who limped through the last few minutes at the Etihad Stadium with a possible groin injury.

“Everyone saw in the last weeks how many injuries the players have. We are going to kill (the players). The bosses at the federation have to reflect. It’s not normal to play the 31st and two days later.

“I know the show must go on, (but) they have to control it. They don’t protect the players, the people come to watch, not the managers or the press conferences. Here in England you don’t protect the players, you have to look for the quality not the quantity.

“Of course, space the (games) out. I’m not saying change Boxing Day, the great tradition, but you cannot play at Selhurst Park, hope to celebrate New Year’s Eve but are thinking about the game two days later. People say it’s impossible, it’s not basketball or tennis, the players need recovery. Just see how many players have muscular injuries.

“The show must go on, we have a lot of people here to take care of them but the schedule does not protect the players.”

City currently have Benjamin Mendy and Gabriel Jesus on the sidelines, both with knee ligament injuries.

4 Clear Signs Your Phone Was Hacked

What is hack?

Hack is unauthorized intrusion into a computer or a network. The person engaged in hacking activities is generally referred to as a hacker.

This hacker may alter system or security features to accomplish a goal that differs from the original purpose of the system.

Here are the clear signs to know if your phone was hacked

Your Phone Suddenly Reboots Itself

This can be caused by two main things. The first is that your phone might be experiencing some performance issues, a system breakdown of some sort.

The second is that it might of course have been hacked and the sudden reboot is a consequence of your phone being tapped. Other signs that accompany your phone’s sudden reboot is your phone also suddenly dialing numbers and starting applications on its own.

Noises or Echos During Your Calls

If you all of a sudden start to hear noises or echos during your calls, and this has never happened when you’re either calling those number or making the calls at that location, your phone might have been hacked and your calls are probably being monitored or listened in on.

Appearance of Mysterious Apps

You can all of sudden notice apps on your phone you don’t remember installing, while this might mean that a friend or relative might have installed it without permission, if you can’t point to anyone of those who have access to your phone as the one responsible for installing the app, then you can at that point consider that your phone might have been hacked.

Hackers can plant apps on phones to snoop, perform actions on their behalf, explore calendars, access GPS etc.

These ‘hacker apps’ can be even be hidden on your phone and be running in the background, this is why you might notice a rapidly decreasing battery life or your phone getting warm out of the blue without you making calls with it or working with it in anyway. To deal with this, it is best to avoid downloading just any kind of app, especially those that come with pop-up ads.

Strange Texts

If you notice strange SMS text messages on your phone or texts that appear as a single square or other strange characters, that might be an attempt by hackers to download spyware or malware onto your device. You should take note of this and be careful of it.

“This was too bad. On the 29th of December 2017 which happens to be a day to my wedding, a greedy designer decided to ruin my big day. I cried all day no stop. Israel Orders Nigerians, Other African Migrants To Leave Or Face Imprisinment

The Israeli government is notifying thousands of  African migrants to leave the country or face incarceration, BBC reports.

The migrants will be given up to $3,500 for leaving within the next 90 days. They will be given the option of going to their home country or third countries.

If they do not leave, the Israeli authorities have threatened that they will start jailing them from April. The UN refugee agency said the controversial plan violated international and Israeli laws.

The Israeli government says their return will be humane and “voluntary”. The order exempts children, elderly people, and victims of slavery and human trafficking.

A spokesperson for Israel’s Population and Immigration Authority told the BBC there were currently 38,000 “infiltrators” in Israel, of whom just 1,420 were being held in detention facilities.

Many of the migrants – who are mostly from Eritrea and Sudan – say they came to Israel to seek asylum after fleeing persecution and conflict, but the authorities regard them as economic migrants.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has claimed that an unchecked influx of African migrants could threaten Israel’s Jewish character.

Nigeria Recorded Over 20,000 Births On January 1st, 2018

UN Children’s Fund (UNICEF) reports that approximately 20,210 babies were born in Nigerian on the New Year’s Day.
The births, represented third largest population of newborns in the world on Jan. 1, 2018. UNICEF also said nearly 386,000 babies would be born worldwide on New Year’s Day, representing some 90 per cent in less developed regions.
The agency reported that Kiribati’s Christmas Island in the Pacific would most likely welcome 2018’s first baby while the U.S., its last.
Globally, over half of these births are estimated to take place in nine countries, according to UNICEF.
These are: India, 69,070; China, 44,760; Nigeria, 20,210; Pakistan, 14,910; Indonesia, 13,370; United States, 11,280; Democratic Republic of Congo, 9,400; Ethiopia, 9,020; and Bangladesh, 8,370.
While many babies would survive, some would not make it past their first day, UNICEF regretted.
Stefan Peterson, UNICEF’s Chief of Health, said on Monday that the UN children’s agency was challenging nations around the world to make sure more newborns survive their first days of life.
“This New Year, UNICEF’s resolution is to help give every child more than an hour, more than a day, more than a month – more than survival,” Peterson said.
In 2016, an estimated 2,600 children died within the first 24 hours every day of the year, according to the UN agency.
UNICEF said that for almost two million newborns, their first week was also their last.
In all, 2.6 million children died before the end of their first month, the global children’s agency regretted.
Among those children, more than 80 per cent died from preventable and treatable causes such as premature birth, complications during delivery, and infections like sepsis and pneumonia, UNICEF said.

Peterson stressed:

“We call on governments and partners to join the fight to save millions of children’s lives by providing proven, low-cost solutions”.
Over the past two decades, the world has seen unprecedented progress in child survival, halving the number of children worldwide who die before their fifth birthday to 5.6 million in 2016.
But in spite of these advances, there has been slower progress for newborns, UNICEF noted adding, babies dying in the first month account for 46 per cent of all deaths among children under five.

Nine Dead, Hundreds Arrested As Fresh Protests Hits Iran

Nine people were killed as fresh unrest hit Iran overnight , state television said Tuesday , while hundreds have been arrested as authorities crack down on the biggest anti -regime demonstrations in years.

An attack on a police station in the town of Qahderijan , in the central province of Isfahan , led to six protesters being killed , the state broadcaster reported.

At least three other towns near the cultural hub of Isfahan saw violence overnight , causing the deaths of a young member of the Revolutionary Guards, a policeman and a bystander.

The estimated death toll is now 21 from five days of unrest that represent the biggest challenge to the Islamic regime since mass demonstrations in 2009.

The unrest appears leaderless and focused on provincial towns and cities , with only small and sporadic protests in Tehran on Monday evening where a heavy police presence was reported.

As violence has spread , authorities have stepped up arrests, with at least 450 people detained in the capital since Saturday and 100 more around Isfahan on Monday , officials told local media.

A Revolutionary Guards spokesman said there was no need for them to intervene directly , but they requested the public to report “seditionist elements ”.

“We will not permit insecurity to continue in any way in Tehran . If it continues, officials will take decisions to finish it,” said Esmail Kowsari, a deputy commander for a local branch of the Revolutionary Guards , on state television.

Ali Shamkhani , secretary of Iran ’s Supreme National Security Council , described the unrest as a “ proxy war against the Iranian people ”.

“Hashtags and messages about the situation in Iran come from the United States , Britain and Saudi Arabia ,” he told local media.

– ‘ Seditionist elements ’ –
President Hassan Rouhani has tried to play down the unrest, which began over economic grievances in second city Mashhad last Thursday but quickly turned against the regime as a whole with chants of “Death to the dictator ”.

“This is nothing , ” he said in a statement on the presidency website , vowing the nation would deal with “this minority who … insult the sanctities and values of the revolution ”.

Pro -regime rallies were held across several towns and cities — reflecting continued support among a large conservative section of society.

“With every day that passes, the crimes of those arrested become more serious and their punishment will become heavier . We no longer consider them as protesters demanding rights, but as people targeting the regime,” the head of Tehran ’s revolutionary court , Moussa Ghazanfarabadi , told the conservative Tasnim news agency.

Rouhani came to power in 2013 promising to mend the economy and ease social tensions, but high living costs and a 12 percent unemployment rate have left many feeling that progress is too slow.

The young are most affected , with as many as 40 percent out of work according to analysts, and rural areas particularly hard -hit.

– ‘ People have had enough ’ –
“People have had enough , especially the young people . They have nothing to be happy about ,” Sarita Mohammadi , a 35 -year - old teacher in Tehran , told AFP.

“The situation is far worse in provinces. Agriculture has been destroyed . I know many who have left the north of the country to come to Tehran to work ,” she added.

Rouhani acknowledged there was “ no problem bigger than unemployment ” in a speech on Sunday, and also vowed a more balanced media and more transparency.

US President Donald Trump , who has repeatedly criticised Tehran over four days of demonstrations , said it was “time for a change ” and that Iran ’s people were “hungry ” for freedom .

The European Union on Monday pushed Iran to guarantee the right to protest and separately British Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson said “the UK is watching events in Iran closely ”.

“We believe that there should be meaningful debate about the legitimate and important issues the protesters are raising and we look to the Iranian authorities to permit this ,” Johnson said in a statement.

Turkey on Tuesday expressed concerned about the protests in a statement that called for “common sense ” to “prevail to prevent any escalation ”.

In 2009, authorities ruthlessly put down protests against the re - election of hardliner Mahmoud Ahmadinejad. At least 36 people were killed in 2009, according to an official toll , while the opposition says 72 died .

Palestinian Teenage Girl Who Slapped Israeli Soldier Risks Jail Term

A 16-year-old Palestinian girl was charged with assault by an Israeli court on Monday following the video footage that showed her hitting an armed Israeli soldier in the face, local media reported.

Ahed Tamimi is accused of other attacks on Israeli security forces as well. Her mother, Nariman, was also been charged by the Israeli military court in the West Bank with causing bodily harm and for incitement, the Israeli newspaper Haaretz reported on Monday.

Both were arrested last month in the village of Nabi Saleh, near Ramallah, according to the Palestinian Wafa news agency.

In a video that quickly spread through social media sites, Tamimi, her mother and another relative appear to be trying to start a confrontation with two Israeli soldiers. Tamimi walks up and hits the man, and a punch lands on his face.

The soldiers hardly react, walking around the same spot but not moving away.

In Israel, the soldiers have been praised for their reserve and Tamimi criticized for being a provocator.

In Arab media, however, Tamimi has been held up as a hero and celebrated as a symbol of the Palestinian resistance to Israeli occupation.

Trump Starts 2018 Twitter Season With Pakistan Slam

US President, Donald Trump has lashed out at Pakistan in his first tweet of the year.

“The United States has foolishly given Pakistan more than 33 billion dollars in aid over the last 15 years, and they have given us nothing but lies and deceit, thinking of our leaders as fools,” the early morning tweet said.

“They give safe haven to the terrorists we hunt in Afghanistan, with little help. No more.”

In response, Pakistani Foreign Minister Khawaja Asif tweeted: “We will respond to President Trump’s tweet shortly inshallah… Will let the world know the truth…difference between facts & fiction.”

#DonaldTrump became a top Twitter trend in Pakistan in no time and thousands of people responded the tweet.

“Some hungover guy working the Pakistan desk at the State Department is having a rough start to 2018,” tweeted Jonah Goldberg, a US-based author and columnist.

The US and Afghanistan accuse Pakistan of providing sanctuaries to Afghan Taliban and the Haqqani terror network. Pakistan rejects the allegations and insists that it has done enough in the fight against terrorism.

President Trump’s remarks suggest that recent diplomatic efforts to find common ground on Pakistan’s role in the region and peace in Afghanistan could fail.

Relations between the two countries have been tense since US President Donald Trump accused Islamabad of supporting “agents of chaos” when introducing his new strategy for Afghanistan in August, and demanding that Pakistan act against the Taliban and Haqqani network.

Relations also suffered when Pakistani authorities ended the house arrest of Islamist Hafiz Saeed, founder of the terrorist group Lashkar-e Toiba (LeT), in November.

The US had declared Saeed a terrorist after a string of deadly bombings in Mumbai in 2008 that killed more than 160 people, among them US citizens.

Four killed In London New Year knife Violence

Four young men were stabbed to death in unrelated incidents in London on New Year's Eve, while a fifth is in a critical condition in hospital, police said Monday.

The unusually concentrated spate of violence adds to the growing concerns about knife crime in London which is at its highest level for five years.  At least 80 people were killed in stabbings in London in 2017, more than half of them under the age of 25.

Detectives launched four separate murder investigations into the overnight attacks, which took place away from the city centre, where more than 100,000 people had gathered to watch the New Year’s Eve fireworks and five men have been arrested, police said.

“It is heart-breaking that, at a time when so many of us are contemplating what lies ahead in 2018, four families are dealing with the grief of losing a loved one to senseless violence and the callous use of knives as lethal weapons,” said police commander Neil Jerome.

Police registered almost 12,100 knife attacks in London in the year to March 2017, which left more than 4,400 people injured the highest figures in five years.

Popular Ghanaian actress, Christiana Awuni who has been portrayed as a ‘witch’ in local movies has finally responded to her critics.

The actress who has been consistently cast as a ‘witch’ by local movie producers has been labeled by many as a ‘witch’ in real life situation.

However, speaking to Agyemang Prempeh on Rainbow radio in Accra, Grace Awuni sarcastically answered her critics she is indeed a witch and has some unique features.

The actress in her interview revealed that she only has exceptional qualities to play unique roles as ‘witch’. She added that many film makers admire her qualities and see her as the best substitute for ‘witch’, hence they continue to cast her for such roles.

“Yes I’m a witch, I took over from three strong witches including Grace Nortey, Maame Dokono and Kyeiwaa; an indication that my witchcraft is unique,” Christiana Awuni said on a lighter note.

She also added, my ‘witchcraft’ is unique so I only operate on broad day light not at night. I don’t even pick a car when I’m moving around”, the actress responded to critics.

‘I Am A Gay’ – Catholic Priest Declares To Parishioners, Gets Standing Ovation

A Roman Catholic priest in Wisconsin, Rev. Gregory Greiten, who serves as the pastor of Milwaukee’s St. Bernadette Parish, received a standing ovation when he opened up about his sexuality to his parishioners on Sunday.

“I am Greg. I am a Roman Catholic priest,” he reportedly told the congregation. “And, yes, I am gay!”

He further detailed his journey toward self-acceptance in a lengthy column published in the National Catholic Reporter on Monday.

“A few Roman Catholic priests around the world have mustered up the courage to break through the wall of silence and speak the truth about their sexual identity,” he wrote. “I pledge to you that I will no longer live my life in the shadows of secrecy. I promise to be my authentically gay self. I will embrace the person that God created me to be.”
“This fire burning deep inside my heart, I will no longer contain. I will not be silent any longer; the price to pay is way too great. I must speak my truth. I have lived far too many years chained up and imprisoned in the closet behind walls of shame, trauma and abuse because of the homophobia and discrimination so prevalent in my church and the world. But rather, today, I chart a new course in freedom and in integrity knowing that there is nothing that anyone can do to hurt or destroy my spirit any longer. First steps in accepting and loving the person God created me to be.”

President Buhari's New Year Message To Nigerians (Full Speech)

I join my fellow citizens this morning to welcome and celebrate the New Year 2018. This year promises to be pivotal in our quest for CHANGE.

Unfortunately, I am saddened to acknowledge that for many this Christmas and New Year holidays have been anything but merry and happy. Instead of showing love, companionship and charity, some of our compatriots chose this period to inflict severe hardship on us all by creating unnecessary fuel scarcity across the country.

The consequence was that not many could travel and the few who did had to pay exorbitant transport fares. This is unacceptable given that NNPC had taken measures to ensure availability at all depots. I am determined to get to the root of this collective blackmail of all Nigerians and ensure that whichever groups are behind this manipulated hardship will be prevented from doing so again.

Such unpatriotism will not divert the Administration from the course we have set ourselves. Our government’s watch word and policy thrust is CHANGE. We must change our way of doing things or we will stagnate and be left behind in the race to lift our people out of poverty and into prosperity.

My address to fellow Nigerians this morning is devoted mainly to informing you about the intense efforts this Administration is putting to address our country’s huge infrastructural deficit.

We are going to make significant in-roads in advancing road, rail and power projects across the country.

The Ministry of Power, Works and Housing is one of the drivers of this Government’s commitment to renew and increase Nigeria’s stock of infrastructure in order to achieve global economic competitiveness as targeted under the Economic Recovery and Growth Plan.

With regards to Railways, we have set ourselves ambitious targets. Already in construction stage is the Lagos-Kano Standard Gauge Railway.

The line should reach Ibadan from Lagos by the end of 2019 and will carry two million passengers per year and five million tons of cargo will be transported every year giving a substantial boost to the country’s economy.

Construction of the Kano – Kaduna segment is expected to commence this year and reach Kaduna by the end of 2019. By the end of 2021 the two ends will be joined so that we will have standard gauge railway across the main North-South trading route.

The Abuja – Kaduna route will be boosted by additional rolling stock next Thursday and will be able to handle one million commuters annually.

At the same time I have approved and negotiations will be concluded in the first part of this year for the Port Harcourt to Maiduguri line covering Aba, Owerri, Umuahia, Enugu, Awka, Abakaliki, Makurdi, Lafia, Jos, Bauchi, Gombe, Yola and Damaturu. The Abuja to Itakpe line will go through Baro and terminate in Warri with construction of a new seaport at Warri.

Negotiations are also advanced for the construction of other railway lines, firstly from Kano to Maradi in Niger Republic passing through Kazaure, Daura, Katsina, Jibia to Maradi.

Secondly, Lagos to Calabar the “Coastal Rail” through Ore, Benin, Agbor, Asaba, Onitsha, Sapele, Ughelli, Warri, Yenagoa, Otuoke, Port Harcourt, Aba, Uyo and Calabar. In the next few years, all these Nigerian cities will be linked by functional modern rail systems, giving enormous boost to the social and economic life of our people.

With respect to the Abuja Capital Light Rail, progress has reached 98% completion, as at 64% completion when we assumed office. Only test runs remain before start of operations.

This train service will stimulate economic activities in the Federal Capital and provide residents with an efficient and safe transportation system. Twelve railway sub-stations around the capital over a 45.2 kilometre route will serve as a catalyst and a pull factor to the economy of the area. The Light Rail System will reduce traffic congestion and carbon emission in line with the Administration’s policy on climate change.

Management of the Federal Road Maintenance Agency (FERMA) has been reconstituted and has been charged with a 12 week rapid intervention in road repairs to cover all the geo-political zones. Government is undertaking repairs and maintenance of 44 roads within the six geo-political zones.

Twenty five major highways will be funded under the N100b SUKUK facility. Each geo-political zone will benefit by an equal amount of N16.67b. The following major highways are to receive special attention:

a. Oyo – Ogbomosho,

b. Ofusu – Ore – Ajebandele – Shagamu,

c. Yenagoa Road Junction – Kolo Otuoke – Bayelsa Palm,

d. Enugu – Port Harcourt Dual Carriage Way,

e. Onitsha – Enugu Expressway,

f. Kaduna Eastern Bypass,

g. Dualization of Kano – Maiduguri Road,

h. Dualization of Abuja – Lokoja – Benin Road,

i. Dualization of Suleja – Minna Road.

In addition, Government has approved work to start on the re-construction of Abuja – Kaduna – Zaria – Kano road which is in a state of disrepair. Work will soon start and is expected to be completed in 2019.

More Nigerians across the country are experiencing improved power supply to their homes and businesses. However, power remains a concern to this government because too many people still do not have regular and reliable supply.

The Payment Assurance Guarantee Scheme which started in January 2016 has enabled the Nigerian Bulk Electricity Trader to raise so far N701 billion to assure Generation Companies of at least 80% payment for any power delivered to the national grid.

Consequently, generation has now reached 7,000MW. On December 8, 2017 the country achieved 5,155MW of power delivered to consumers, the highest level ever recorded.

Several moribund projects have been revived. Repairs of Afam Power Station added 110MW in 2017 and another 240MW will be added this year through a private investment partnership.

Katsina Power Project is now being tested and producing 10MW of power from wind for the first time in Nigeria. It should be fully operational this year.

The Zungeru 700MW Hydroelectric Power Project, stalled by court cases is due for completion in 2019. The transmission and other requirements to operate the 30MW Gurara Phase 1 Hydroelectric Plant, the 40MW Kashimbilla Hydroelectric Plant and the 215 MW Kaduna Gas/LPG/Diesel Power Plant will also be completed this year.

A landmark project, Mambilla Hydroelectric Power Project is at last taking off. This project has been on the drawing Board for 40 years, but now the engineering, procurement and construction contract for the 3,050MW project has been agreed with a Chinese joint venture Company with a financing commitment from the government of China. Completion is targeted for 2023.

As I mentioned earlier, the Transmission Company of Nigeria can now distribute all the 7,000MW that can be generated. TCN and the Niger Delta Holding Company have added 1,950MVA of 330 down to 132KV transformer capacity of 10 transmission stations and 2,930MVA of 132 down to 33KV transformer capacity of 42 sub-stations including Ikot Ekpene, Aba, Alagbon, Ajah, Ejigbo, Funtua and Zaria.

This Administration is working with the privatised distribution Companies to overcome the continuing challenges of distribution.

These massive public works should spearhead the recovery and lead millions back to employment. You will recall that it was not until last year that we got out of the economic recession into which the country had fallen as a consequence of past unsustainable economic policies which projected short-term illusory growth.

The government is slowly stabilizing the economy.

It was in order to change the steady and steep decline that we adopted the more sustainable policies and programmes captured in the Economic Recovery Plan. Diversification efforts have resulted in improved output particularly in agriculture and solid minerals sectors. The relative exchange rate stability has improved manufacturing sector performance.

We have got to get used to discipline and direction in economic management. The days of business as usual are numbered.

Two years ago I appealed to people to go back to the land. I am highly gratified that agriculture has picked up, contributing to the government’s effort to re-structure the economy. Rice imports will stop this year. Local rice, fresher and more nutritious will be on our dishes from now on.

By the same token, I am today appealing to enterprising Nigerians with ideas and unemployed graduates and other able-bodied and literate men and women with ideas not to just sit and wait for employment from the government or the Organized Private Sector. Great nations are built by enterprising people who turn their hands to anything that circumstances dictate.

In respect of political developments, I have kept a close watch on the on-going debate about “Restructuring”. No human law or edifice is perfect. Whatever structure we develop must periodically be perfected according to changing circumstances and the country’s socio-economic developments. We Nigerians can be very impatient and want to improve our conditions faster than may be possible considering our resources and capabilities. When all the aggregates of nationwide opinions are considered, my firm view is that our problems are more to do with process than structure.

We tried the Parliamentary system: we jettisoned it. Now there are shrill cries for a return to the Parliamentary structure. In older democracies these systems took centuries to evolve so we cannot expect a copied system to fit neatly our purposes. We must give a long period of trial and improvement before the system we have adopted is anywhere near fit for purpose.

However, there is a strong case for a closer look at the cost of government and for the public services long used to extravagance, waste and corruption to change for the better. I assure you that government is ever receptive to ideas which will improve governance and contribute to the country’s peace and stability.

As the electioneering season approaches politicians must avoid exploiting ethnicity and religion by linking ethnicity with religion and religion with politics. Such must be avoided at all costs if we are to live in harmony.

In this respect the rest of Nigeria could learn from the South Western States who have successfully internalized religion, ethnicity and politics.

Political discourse should be conducted with civility, decorum and in a constitutional manner. We all have a collective responsibility to strengthen our democracy and entrench the rule of law. We should draw encouragement from the series of bye-elections conducted by INEC last year which were generally violence free and their outcomes adjudged to be free and fair.

Before I conclude my address I must reassure my fellow citizens that security of life and property is still top of our government’s agenda. We have since beaten Boko Haram. Isolated attacks still occur, but even the best-policed countries cannot prevent determined criminals from committing terrible acts of terror as we have seen during the past years in Europe, Asia, Middle East, elsewhere in Africa and in America.

Our government remains determined to protect all Nigerians in line with our election pledge and promises. On behalf of all Nigerians let me offer our thanks to the Armed forces, the Police, other para-military forces and traditional authorities who are working round the clock to ensure that you and I go about our normal business in reasonable safety.

Terrorism and urban crimes are world-wide phenomena and our security forces are continuously adapting their responses to changing threats.

With regard to rampant cases of kidnappings, we are taking immediate short-term measures to combat this new evil creeping into our societies. Tighter police methods and swift and severe punishment for those proved to be engaged in kidnapping are on the way.

With respect to Niger Delta, Government is still engaging responsible leadership of the Communities to help in identifying and addressing genuine grievances of the region. Our clean-up programme in collaboration with the United Nations is making satisfactory progress.

I am grateful to all the Governors and other Political & Community leaders of the Niger Delta States for their part in bringing relative peace to the areas.

Finally let me again express my heartfelt thanks to all Nigerians who prayed for me during my illness last year. I feel deeply humbled by your prayers and good wishes and I am more determined than ever to serve you to the best of my ability.

Good morning. And I wish everyone a Happy New Year.
