5 Important Things Happening In South Africa Today

Here’s what is happening in and affecting South Africa today:

  • UK bank HSCB has been implicated in the widening Gupta scandal, accused of being possibly “criminally complicit” in allegations of money laundering surrounding the family. The bank is being accused of ignoring internal warnings about some questionable transactions with Gutpta accounts, and not having the requisite licences to process them
  • Foreign investors have reversed their position on the South African bond market, and are now bailing at an alarming rate. According to data compiled by Bloomberg, foreign investors have dumped a net R11.5 billion rand of South African bonds in the five days since Finance Minister Malusi Gigaba delivered his mid-term budget statement.
  • Eskom’s suspended group executive for generation, Matshela Koko has started spilling the beans on corrupt activities at the power utility, with his latest claim that a supplier at the Kusile power station was bribing employees – three of which he suspended. Koko is himself facing misconduct charges relating to conflicts of interest.
  • You can now expect to pay 14% more for whole wheat bread in South Africa as the VAT exemption for the product has been scrapped. Whole wheat bread, high-fibre bread and whole wheat brown bread were all previously considered ‘brown bread’ and exempt from tax, however a technical amendment to bread laws has classed them as different types, subject to VAT.
  • South Africa’s rand currency was firmer on Wednesday, boosted by positive economic data and a return of investors attracted by the low exchange rate and high bond yields ahead of an interest rate decision by the U.S. central bank. On Thursday the rand was at R13.95 to the dollar, R18.54 to the pound and R16.27 to the euro.

Napoli 2-4 Manchester City:Striker Sergio Aguero Breaks Club's All-Time Goal Record

Sergio Aguero became Manchester City's all-time top-scorer as they beat Napoli to reach the Champions League knockout stages in a game that lived up to the hype.

Sergio Aguero has not stopped scoring since his first day in the Premier League and it is just phenomenal.

The striker has netted his 178th goal for the club against Napoli in the UEFA Champions League.

The goal sees Aguero pass club legend Eric Brook. The latter spent 11 years with City between 1928 and 1939, whereas the former is only into his sixth season at the club.

City came from behind to win in a meeting between the free-scoring, unbeaten top sides in the Premier League and Serie A.

The hosts were on top for the first 30 minutes and deservedly led when Lorenzo Insigne played an excellent one-two with Dries Mertens and steered the ball past Ederson.

City started to see more of the ball after Napoli's blistering start and were level when Nicolas Otamendi headed in a cross from Ilkay Gundogan - a surprising selection in the starting 11.

City and Napoli have arguably been Europe's two most entertaining sides this season, with a combined 67 goals from 21 league games - dropping only two points each.

Fans were expecting a fantastic game of pressing, passing, pace and precise finishing - and and they were not disappointed.

What's next?

City look to maintain their unbeaten start to the season when they host Arsenal in the Premier League on Sunday (14:15 GMT). Napoli - looking to do the same - are at Chievo 15 minutes earlier.

Two Remanded In Prison Custody Over Drug Trafficking

A Federal High Court sitting in Lagos, yesterday, reman-ded two men, Okonkwo Victor and Bankole Johnson, in prison custody over alleged unlawful dealings in cocaine.

A truck load of seized fake drugs Okonkwo and Bankole, who is also known as Rotimi Adekunle, were arraigned on a count charge of unlawful dealings in the banned drug by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, NDLEA.

The NDLEA prosecutor, Kunle Adebajo, told the court that the defendants were arrested at the EMS section of Marina Post Office on July 15, where they have gone to receive 200 grammes of cocaine sent to them by their accomplice. He said the offences are punishable under Section 11(b) of the NDLEA Act Cap. N30, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria, 2004.

However, the duo, who were docked before Justice Hadiza Rabiu-Shagari, pleaded not guilty to the charge. Following their plea, the prosecutor asked the court for a trial date, while also urging the court to remand them in prison custody, pending the determination of the case.

However, counsel to the defendants, Mr. Anthony Nnamoko and Chief Lilian Omotunde, jointly told the court that they are not opposing the prosecutor’s application for a trial date, but pleaded with the court to grant their clients bail in the most liberal terms.

Both counsel informed the court that they had separately filed application for their clients’ bail and attached with the said applications are affidavits and writing addresses, adding that their clients have competent surety to stand for them.

However, NDLEA’s prosecutor, Adebajo, urged the court to dismiss the defendants’ bail applications due to the gravity of the offence committed. Consequently, Justice Rabiu-Shagari ordered the duo remanded in prison custody, pending when she will rule on their application and adjourned the case till November 20.

Dustin Hoffman Sexually Harassed Me On Set When I Was 17 - A Top US Author Claims

A top US author claims she was sexually harassed by an American actor and a director, Dustin Hoffman, 80, when she was a 17-year-old intern on the set of the movie, Death of a Salesman.

The Graduate star, 80, told a young Hunter he wanted a "hard-boiled egg, and a soft-boiled clitoris" in one of her most damning allegations.

She also alleged he repeatedly asked if she had recently had sex, told Hunter he wanted her breasts for lunch and gave several women on set a keyring carrying the words "Love, Willy".

The author added: "At 49, I understand what Dustin Hoffman did as it fits into the larger pattern of what women experience in Hollywood and everywhere.

"He was a predator, I was a child, and this was sexual harassment."

However, she claims she was reprimanded by her supervisor for making it “an issue.”

She told THR on reflection:
"Yes, he was gross. But he could also be sweet and wanted me to like him. Which I did… Whenever I talk about this, I sense that my listeners want a victim and a villain. And I wish my feelings were as clear as theirs. I would be more comfortable if I felt nothing but revulsion for a man who had power over me and abused it. But I still like watching him onscreen."At 49, I understand what Dustin Hoffman did as it fits into the larger pattern of what women experience in Hollywood and everywhere. He was a predator, I was a child, and this was sexual harassment. As to how it fits into my own pattern, I imagine I'll be figuring that out for years to come."
Double Oscar winner Hoffman, who was 48 at the time, apologised following Hunter's claims, published by Hollywood Reporter. He said;
"I have the utmost respect for women and feel terrible that anything I might have done could have put her in an uncomfortable situation. I am sorry. It is not reflective of who I am.”

'Yoruba Demon': See How It Was Described By Urban Dictionary

It used to be a stereotype before but the narrative isn't the same anymore.

The descriptions are quite hilarious.

The first, as seen on Urban Dictionary;

A Yoruba demon is typically a young man of Yoruba (the Yoruba is a tribe predominantly found in South West Nigeria ) descent who has the uncanny gift to effortlessly make ladies fall head over heels in love with him. He is naturally a gifted smooth talker and Casanova and prides himself in been able to acquire a huge followership of female admirers and side chicks. He is also gifted at absolving himself of any responsibility in his relationships. Generally, he is a seductive cock-tail of sweet and bitter.

There is no going back after you date a Yoruba demon, you keep coming back for more.

Second;
A Nigerian guy (yoruba) who goes after a young lady's heart with no intention of loving her. They are typically met at parties, and would mostly wear white agbada (clothing).

Sad! 7 months old baby suffocated?to death by?cr?che caretaker while feeding her?pap
According to the report shared by Amanda Chisom on Facebook;

"A woman registered her 7months old baby in a crèche called easy landers at 3A Benson Anorue street Ajao estate just last September cos she is currently running her NYSC program in a company here in Lagos. So on that faithful day been 26th of October, she dropped her baby at the school with the so called crèche teacher miss chinemelem from IMO state. just like in the next 30mins she dropped the baby at the school.getting to her office , she got a call from the crèche teacher that her baby was shivering and she was so socked and asked her what happened and the teacher told her that she was feeding her with pap at some point the baby choked up and started having short breath with pap coming out from her nose and mouth with a terrible shivering.so the mum told her to rush the baby to the near by hospital at faith city at Ajao that she is coming. FULL TEXT: President Muhammadu Buhari’s Speech At The APC National Executive Congress

President Muhammadu Buhari was part of the 2017 All Progressive Congress (APC) National Executive Congress Meeting at the APC Headquarters Abuja yesterday.

Below is the speech he delivered...

Protocols:

May I warmly welcome everybody to this important meeting of our party’s executive body.

Let me on a personal note thank you all for your prayers and good wishes, which the Almighty Allah answered in the restoration of my health. I wish to thank you all Party leaders for helping to keep the government running smoothly during my prolonged absence.

I would like to start by commending our Party Leadership chaired by His Excellency, Chief John Oyegun. The Chairman and I worked harmoniously during 1984-85 in a previous government. Happily, circumstances have brought us again to positions of leadership in the country.

I want to thank Chief Oyegun and his staff for steering the party in the last two and a half years. Sometimes it is easier to manage failure than to manage success - and a big success such as that we have achieved.

I must also commend the leadership of the National Assembly led by Senate President His Excellency, Dr. Abubakar Bukola Saraki and Rt. Hon. Speaker Mr. Yakubu Dogara. I must place on record the cooperation and understanding of the National Assembly including some non-APC members who rose above petty party interests and acted in the national interest.

My deep thanks also go to our State Governors who faced stiff challenges, especially their determination to maintain unity and tolerance among our communities. This is in the face of unnecessary politically motivated strife and violence. Credit should go to APC Governors for extending their hand of fellowship to their colleagues from other parties.

In my remarks to the Caucus meeting yesterday, I enumerated the progress that our government has made in the implementation of the programs of government and the Party Manifesto.

We can be proud of our achievements in the last two years, Boko Haram, Niger Delta, Regular Fuel, Improved Power, TSA, Agriculture and Fertilizer, above all, the knowledge that corruption will not be tolerated in this Government. We all know there is CHANGE.

Nigeria’s prestige has gone up, Nigeria is now credit–worthy, a clear testimony of which was the over-subscription of the Euro-Bond by 4 times. Nevertheless, we are not resting on our achievements. I am quite aware of the challenges before us. Last year I said we would re-constitute the Boards of Parastatals. I must regret the fact that we have not done so, for many reasons.

Some of us in this meeting may know I had given instructions since October 2015 for this exercise to start. But there have been inordinate delays through several Committees in an attempt to get the balance right and to make sure all parts of the country are equitably represented.

On the other hand I am keenly aware that our supporters are very eager for these appointments to be announced. By the Grace of God these appointments will be announced soon. Especially now that the economy is improving, we will have the resources to cater for the appointees. By the same token the compressed Federal Executive Council will be expanded to bring in more supporters at Federal Level, with fresh ideas to be injected into the government.

Let me thank you all again for the commitment and dedicated service to our Party and to remind you that much more will be required of you in the coming months. I hope we can continue to depend on you.

If we keep united and rise above petty or personal quarrels we will surely achieve the desired CHANGE in the country.

I wish us happy deliberations.

Thank you.

AS Roma 3 - 0 Chelsea: Roma Demolish Chelsea In Champions League

English Champions, Chelsea became the first English team to lose a Champions League game this season as they were well beaten by a clinical Roma.

The Blues would have progressed with a victory, but trailed within 39 seconds when Edin Dzeko flicked Aleksandar Kolarov’s cross down to Stephan El Shaarawy, who smashed home from 25 yards.

Alvaro Morata missed a huge chance to equalise from close range, and El Shaarawy made it 2-0 when ex-Roma defender Antonio Rudiger failed to deal with Radja Nainggolan’s long ball forward.

Chelsea somehow managed to contrive to miss all their chances , ranging from decent to good to at least one sitter; unfortunately, Roma were guilty of no such wastefulness. Quite the opposite in fact, starting from minute one and then adding to it thanks to sloppy Chelsea plays, giveaways, mistakes.

Chelsea drop to second in the group, one point behind Roma. Atleti only managed a draw , so a win away at Qarabag next time will be enough to qualify for the knockout round.

Chelsea next Premier League game will be Man United at Stamford Bridge, on Sunday, 5 November, Time - 5:30 PM
