One killed as container falls off overhead bridge in Ghana

One person has been confirmed dead in a fatal accident that involved a container loaded
with bags of cement that fell off an overhead bridge in Mahama Dubai interchange in Ghana
Wednesday evening. Eyewitnesses say the truck
diver suffered a brake failure moments before the accident occurred.See more photos

The country's Minister of Environment, Jan Makamba has said from Thursday, March 2, 2017, there will be no import, manufacture, sales and
consumption of alcohol contained in plastic bags
in the country. The move which is expected to upset businessmen, some of whom make huge profits from their sale, as well as drinkers who
will be forced to pay for bottled alcohol.

But the Minister said the ban will help protect its youths and environment due to the careless consumption of Alcohol.

Last year, Tanzanian President John Magufuli had announced the ban would come into force in 2017, after several countries such as Ivory Coast, Senegal, Malawi and Rwanda did impose bans on
alcohol sachets. The sachet ban comes after the government launched an anti-drugs campaign last month.

Prophet Patrick Mugadza, the leader of Kariba Church in Zimbabwe, who is alleged to have committed criminal offence by saying that President Robert Mugabe would die on October 17 this year, was further remanded in custody to next Monday Last month, he was arrested for creating a nuisance by giving a prophecy that President
Mugabe wasn't going to live to see the end of 2017.

Prophet Mugaza who has spent more than a month in remand prison following his arrest
appeared before the High Court judge Priscillah Chigumba yesterday.

His lawyer and prosecutor Editor Mavuto agreed to have the matter postponed to March 8.

Speaking to journalist after the adjournment, he said 'Like I said earlier on that I'm not happy for someone to die, but this is something that is going to happen.

Prophet Patrick Mugadza, is being charged with insulting the Christain and African religions when he predicted that the 93-year-old president would die on October 17 this year.

Gunmen numbering about nine have attacked the police team stationed at Nkpo Market , near Onitsha , Anambra State.

It was gathered that the men struck at about 8 . 30pm on Tuesday . One policeman was confirmed killed in the attack, while another was shot in the leg.

It was gathered that an AK - 47 rifle belonging to one of the policemen on the team was snatched by the gunmen.

Sources said the gang members took the policemen unaware and opened fire on them.

One of the sources said , “ They were going for another mission ,but they saw the policemen and headed towards them, shooting one of them dead.

The dead policeman was later identified as Sergeant Mathew Julius . They snatched
his AK - 47 rifle.

“ Another policeman , Sergeant David Alex, was shot in the leg , but he escape through the gutter.”

Our correspondent gathered that two other AK - 47 rifles that were kept in the police vehicle when the robbers struck
were not stolen.

The Ogidi Divisional Police Officer, Mr Hassan Musa , said, “ We took the dead and the injured policemen to Borromeo
Hospital. Investigation is ongoing to arrest the fleeing robbers .”

The murder of a woman
and her three children has
been confirmed by the
Lagos State Commissioner
of Police, Fatai Owoseni, on
Wednesday, March 1, 2017.
He said that the victims were killed in an uncompleted church building at Agbowa, near Ikorodu, Lagos state.

According to Owoseni, the police were called to the crime scene at about 4:30 am on Wednesday.

He said,“The incident happened at about 3 am this morning at Agbowa in Ikorodu.

“The three murdered children were aged four, five and nine.

“The mother of the children was also wounded and later died in the hospital.”

It was reported that the police are yet to identify the motive behind the gruesome murder but that the Lagos State Police Command, has begun an
investigation into the case in order to bring the culprits to justice.

“We want to seize this opportunity to assure the public that we will continue to increase our visibility.

Nigerian Victor Moses has today signed a new contract with the Blues.

The 26-year-old has established himself as a

National Leader of APC, Bola Tinubu, says he will never contest for Presidency against President Buhari and he won't eever support anyone who

presidential election and that he has picked three possible running mates namely Sokoto state governor Aminu Tambuwal, Senator Abu Ibrahim and the Emir of Kano, Alhaji Sanusi Lamido Sanusi.

In the statement released by his media aide, Tunde Rahman, Tinubu said the report was
cooked up just to create tension and division between him and President Buhari. He vowed never to contest for presidency against President Buhari nor will he support anyone who does.

“The story is a manufactured tale weaved by its authors to try to create division where there is none. Those who wrote this fantasy piece seek to place Asiwaju Tinubu at odds with President Buhari. Writing
such a baseless report is a very foul and wrong thing to do. As long as that patriotic and committed man named

the pressure to create false headlines instead of following the ethics of their craft to follow the truth even if the truth is more pedestrian and less volatile than what the

makes no sense that he would abandon the party that he worked hard to build in order to enter the dilapidated building the PDP has become. Asiwaju worked for over 16 years to break the PDP yoke on the
nation. After breaking that yoke, it is not in his nature to voluntarily place it back on
our necks. Anyone who has followed his career, even his staunchest critics, knows
Asiwaju for his partisan consistency. He is not a party hopper. He is loyal and sticks
with the party to which he belongs. After fighting for so many years to elevate his
party to the position of national leadership, he would not give that away in order to
join with those who blame him for their currently bleak political circumstance. We understand all too well the genesis of this
false news report. For their own reasons, THISDAY has joined with those who seek to put Asiwaju Tinubu at odds with our President. This scam will fail. Asiwaju supports and stands behind President
Buhari. He wishes the president well and that he returns soon. Whether the president is here or away, he has the full loyalty of Asiwaju Tinubu. President Buhari can rest assured on this point: Asiwaju Tinubu will never contest against him nor

A lady's corpse was ascertained at Ihie Bridge through Isi court Amakama in Umuahia south LGA of Abia state by residents yesterday
Tuesday February 28th.

Residents said the deceased may have been raped and killed by some hoodlums on Monday
and her body dumped under the bridge.

Spokesperson of the Abia state Police command, Ogbonnaya Geoffrey, confirmed the incident and said the police is investigating the matter.

The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has revealed that the number of internet users in Nigeria’s telecommunications networks declined to 91, 274,446 in January. This was disclosed in
its Monthly Internet Subscribers Data for January
2017. Internet users dropped to 91,274,446 in January as against 91,880.032 users recorded in December 2016, showing a decline of 605,586.
GSM service providers, according to the data
released, lost 605,586 internet customers. For Etisalat, the data showed 13,564.284 customers browsed the internet in January revealing a
decrease of 188.656 users against the 13,752.940 users recorded in December 2016.

MTN which had 31,015.45 subscribers browsing the internet on its network in January, had a drop of 737, 964 internet subscribers in January after recording 31,753.369 in December 2016.

However, Airtel had 19,618.485 internet users in January, adding 254, 94 customers to its
December record of 19,363.545 and Globacom had 27,076,272 internet users in January,
recording an increase of 66,094 users from the 27,010.178 users of the internet on the network
in December 2016

A Medview Airline flight took off from Lagos for Abuja but developed a fault soon after take- off, causing the plane to return to the Lagos Airport.

The plane with flight number VL 2102 was airborne, carrying 105 people; passengers and
crew members inclusive, when the fault was noticed.

A passenger on the flight revealed that there had been suspicion of a fault before take-off however, the pilot and crew members assured them that
everything was fine.

“They want to kill over 100 passengers with their faulty plane,” a passenger, Oladejo Olowu, told Premium Times.

The plane was scheduled to get to Abuja before making a final journey to Yola, Adamawa State.

Angry Marioshioni residents set on fire trailers estimated to be worth Sh160 million as they
protested at the death of a motorcyclist and his
passenger.

Mr Rodas Kibet, an eyewitness, said the rider was trying to overtake a trailer at Marioshioni
on the road to Elburgon when he was crushed by another lorry that was coming from the
opposite direction.

"The drivers escaped unscathed but the rider and his passenger died on the spot," Kibet said. One of the trailers was ferrying logs from Kiptunga Forest.

Local residents protested at the death of the two, a local pastor, Robert Ranoi, and the rider,
David Leharash, by burning 15 vehicles belonging to Comply Industries Limited.

County police boss Hassan Barua said: "Although police officers were at the scene, they were overwhelmed by the angry residents, who burnt the two vehicles and afterwards
headed to Kiptunga Forest and torched 13 others."

The residents also burnt loaders, a Land Cruiser, and the logs that the trailers were carrying. They looted equipment, including
power saws.

"We are investigating the matter and those found to have been involved in the destruction
of the company's property will face the law," Barua said, adding that officers had the names of several suspects.
Comply Industries Limited operations manager Stephen Kihumba said his company may have lost more than Sh160 million and accused local politicians of inciting residents.

"This should never have happened because the company has always maintained a good relationship with the local community,"
Kihumba said.
"Local leaders should have talked to us in case there was a problem, which we would have
resolved through dialogue, instead of inciting residents to destroy company property," he
added.

Area MCA Agnes Salimu termed the incident as
unfortunate. She said residents were unhappy after the company allegedly refused to offer them jobs.

"We have established there is more to the burning of the vehicles than meets the eye. The people are also angry at the Kenya Forest Service's refusal to renew their logging
licences," Mrs Salimu said.
Ogiek Council of Elders chairman Joseph Towett said tension has been high in the area since July last year when residents' logging licences expired and were not renewed.

Kihumba said his company has been involved in community projects, including maintaining
roads. However, residents dismissed this, saying the company was only repairing the roads for its own benefit.
