MTN Launches First 5G Technology In Africa

South Africa-based multinational mobile telecommunications company, MTN says it has achieved download speeds of more than 20 gigabits per second. The first 5G technology and applications trial in Africa, which is part of a 5G demonstration starting in the first quarter of 2018.

MTN has tested a range of 5G use cases and applications in its Test Lab proof of concept in South Africa, which will lead to commercial deployment in the near future.

“This is the highest achieved on a mobile network in Africa‚” the service provider said in a statement on Monday.

The Chief Technology and Information Officer, MTN Group, Babak Fouladi, speaking on the announcement said, “In collaboration with our partners, we are continuously pushing the boundaries of how 5G can meet the diverse needs of our customers. 5G gives us the opportunity to rethink how our business can add further value to the lives of our customers.”

Speaking at the event, Chief Technology and Information Officer for MTN SA, Giovanni Chiarelli, said that 5G offered a whole new world of potential for South Africa and the continent.

The Independent Communications Authority of South Africa‚ which regulates spectrum‚ has not yet allocated spectrum for 4G infrastructure‚ TechCentral reported‚ forcing operators to reallocate 2G and 3G spectrum.

MTN has a 4G license in Nigeria and could look forward deploying the technology in the country in the near future.

MTN has collaborated with network equipment provider Ericsson on its 5G trial and found that the technology is at least 100 times faster than 4G.
