3 men Remanded in Prison over Attack on Nigerian League Referee

In the aftermath of the condemnable attack on match officials in a Nigerian League clash on Sunday, Justice L. Yakubu of the Upper Sharia Court No 1 on Tuesday remanded the three suspects in prison.

There were chaotic scenes after NPFL sides Wikki Tourists and Rangers played a 1-1 draw at the Abubakar Tafawa Balewa Stadium in Bauchi, with a section of the home crowd descending on the referees for alleged bias.

The suspects, Mohammed Isa, Hamisu Mohammed and Yola Ishaya alias Chara, pleaded not guilty after they were arraigned before the Judge in a sitting Tuesday, Punch writes.

Counsel for the three accused M. Lawan, has his application for bail opposed by the prosecutor Sgt. Lano Salihu who urged the court to dismiss it on three grounds, including the possibility that they might jump bail.

He also argued that the police were still awaiting the First Information Report from the victims who are based in Abuja on the nature of their injuries. In his ruling, Justice Yakubu agreed with the prayers of the prosecutor and directed that the three accused be kept in the Bauchi prison, before adjourning the case till the August 31.

The mayhem at the Tafawa Balewa Stadium on Sunday left FIFA referee Bose Momoh with a serious injury to her eye after she was allegedly attacked with a stone by a suspected Wikki Tourist fan, Mohammed Isa, who invaded the pitch.
