Two soldiers who assaulted cripple for wearing camouflage arrested

The Nigerian Army, yesterday, said it has arrested two soldiers that maltreated a physically challenged person in Onitsha,
Anambra State for allegedly wearing army
camouflage uniform.

The victim was said to have been beaten up by
the soldiers who demanded that he must
remove the camouflage uniform but he resisted
the soldier’s action along New Market Road, Onitsha.

A statement by the Deputy Director, Army Public
Relations, 82 Division, Nigerian Army, Col. Sagir
Musa, said the soldiers were identified through a
video clip while maltreating the man. He described the action as a gross professional misconduct.

He said: “The attention of the Headquarters, 82
Division of Nigerian Army has been drawn to a video clip of two military police soldiers
maltreating a physically challenged person along
New Market Road, Onitsha, for allegedly wearing

army camouflage uniform.
“The division has, with great concern, studied
the video, identified and arrested the
perpetrators of this gross professional misconduct.
“It is our position that their action does not
reflect the attitude of today’s Nigerian Army
under the leadership of Lt. Gen. Turkur Yusuf
Buratai. The action is uncalled for, unwarranted and is, therefore, condemnable by all civilized people organization.

“The soldiers have been tried at the unit level and referred to higher level for appropriate
punishment commensurate to the offence committed.

“The Nigerian Army always preaches tolerance,
respect for others and peaceful co-existence.

The Army of today has consistently maintained
zero tolerance for indiscipline and human rights
violation.

“Whatever human right infraction is seen,
appropriate sanction will be applied to serve as
deterrence to others. This case would not be an
exception.”
