BRAZIL’S FOREIGN AFFAIRS MINISTER JOSÉ SERRA RESIGNS DUE TO HEALTH ISSUES

The 74-year-old minister claims pain from his spine surgery limited any international travel

Brazil’s Foreign Affairs Minister José Serra resigned on Wednesday evening, citing health reasons. The ex governor of São Paulo only occupied the ministry seat for less than a year. President
Temer named him Foreign Minister in May when he first took office from Dilma Rousseff.

Serra claims the pain from his spine surgery hinders him from undertaking the international travel required by the position.

He also states that President
Temer was aware of his condition. Stepping down, Serra will return to the Senate where he has a seat, in order to
“help the government push for reforms,” he states.

Although Serra is considered a
potential candidate for the upcoming 2018 presidential elections, his health issues may prove problematic for his
campaign.

Next in line

The minister’s replacement
will probably come from within his party, the center-right PSDB. Next in line for the job is Aloysio Nunes, the government’s leader in the Senate.

Sérgio Amaral, the incumbent Brazilian Ambassador to the USA, is another prominent choice.
