Court Awards N10m Damages Over Death Of Pregnant Woman

Delta State High Court has awarded N10 million in damages against the Delta State Commissioner of Justice and Attorney General, the Hospitals Management Board (HMB), and two others over the death of a pregnant woman in November 2012.

The court ruled that the pregnant woman, Elo Joseph, died due to medical negligence.

According to Sahara Reporters, the defendants charged are the Delta State Hospital Management Board, Delta State Attorney General Peter Mrakpor, Dr. Nwabua, and Dr. Mike Ozoemena.

Mrs. Joseph’s husband, Onome Joseph, had filed a suit against the defendants in 2013. Oghenejabor Ikimi, a human rights lawyer and Executive Director of the Centre for the Vulnerable and the Underprivileged (CENTREP), represented Mr. Joseph in the trial.

Mr. Ikimi argued that the late Mrs. Joseph died due to negligence and the unexplained absence of members of the obstetric team who were supposed to be on duty at the Central Hospital in Ughelli, where Mrs. Joseph was transferred to for maternal care.

According to the plaintiff's lawyer, the deceased had registered at the General Hospital, Otu-Jeremi for antenatal treatment on February 4, 2012. She regularly attended her appointments at the Otu-Jeremi hospital until November 25, 2012, when she began to experience signs of labor.

“Mr. Joseph, upon rushing his wife, Mrs. Elo Joseph, to the General Hospital, Otu-Jeremi, discovered to his dismay that there was only one nurse in the entire facility and not one doctor to attend to his said wife. At about 7:30 a.m., a nurse on duty at the hospital called Mr. Onome Joseph on the phone to inform him that his wife was bleeding, and upon his arrival, he was given a referral letter by a doctor to the obstetric team on call at the Central Hospital, Ughelli for expert management of the case of his wife,” Mr. Ikimi narrated.
“On getting to the Central Hospital, Ughelli an hour later, Mr. Joseph, to his surprise, was told by a houseman on duty at the obstetrics and gynecology ward that members of the obstetric team on call, including two medical consultants and two medical officers, who were supposed to be on duty at the said hospital had all gone away for the weekend.
“Mrs. Elo Joseph, who had labored for close to eight hours and whose bleeding condition had grown worse, was then referred to a private clinic in Ughelli by the said houseman where she had a stillbirth and later died of severe bleeding.”

Former Yemeni President, Ali Abdullah Saleh, Said To Have Been Killed

Ali Abdullah Saleh, Yemen's former president, has reportedly been killed after his forces and their Houthi rebel allies turned their guns on each other.

Fighters loyal to Mr Saleh, who was ousted from power in 2012, had been fighting alongside the Houthis for more than two years against the internationally recognised government of Yemen and a coalition of Arab states led by Saudi Arabia.

But last week the alliance between Mr Saleh and the Houthis collapsed and over the weekend the split descended into open warfare on the streets of Sanaa, the rebel-held capital of Yemen.

The 75-year-old Mr Saleh was killed during the fighting, according to Houthi-controlled media.

"The interior ministry announces the end of the crisis of militias and the killing of their leader and a number of his criminal supporters," an anchor said on the Houthi's official Al-Masirah television.

Unverified photographs and video also began to circulate on social media, showing what appeared to be the former president’s body with a grievous head injury.

There was no official confirmation of Mr Saleh’s death and officials from Mr Saleh’s General People's Congress party had insisted earlier in the day that he was still alive.

The fighting between rebel groups brought chaos to Sanaa, a city already wracked by war and disease, and humanitarian groups said their operations had been paralysed by the street battles.

The Saudi-led coalition tried to take advantage of the schism between rebel groups and stepped up airstrikes against Houthi forces. The coalition warned civilians to get away from Houthi-controlled areas.

Yemen’s official government said it was preparing to mount an offensive against the Houthis in Sanaa but it was not clear if it had the capacity to launch a serious attack.

The Houthis appeared to be in control of most of Sanaa by Monday afternoon and a spokesman said they had defeated most of Mr Saleh’s  forces.

Obama Advises Trump, Others: Think Before Tweeting

The former US president, Barack Obama, has warned leaders to think before tweeting, saying that the social media tools such as  Facebook, WhatsApp and Twitter are leading to “snap judgments to complex issues”.
Obama at a New Delhi symposium in India on Friday, was repeatedly asked about his successor, President Donald Trump, who is a frequent user of Twitter. But Obama stuck to a general warning to all high-profile figures to take care.

“I think it’s important to be mindful of both the power of these tools but also its limits,” Obama said when asked about the dangers of Twitter, a platform on which Trump has caused repeat controversies.

“What I would say is Twitter, Facebook, WhatsApp, all these various platforms are extraordinarily powerful tools, and those tools can be used for good and they can be used for ill,” he said.

Highlighting how he has 100 million Twitter followers — “more than other people who use it more often” — Obama said: “I think it’s important to be mindful of both the power of these tools but also its limits.”

How To Avoid Being Stabbed To Death By Your Wife

Recent studies have shown that many young guys are afraid of getting married these days just because of the increased rate which women stab their husband to death.

Just of a recent, a woman was accused of stabbing her husband to death in Abuja because she suspected that her husband is cheating on her. Well, in this my article I try to highlight what a husband should do in case he suspects that her wife is trying to take laws into her hands.

1) Avoid unnecessary arguments : This is not the best time to argue with your wife since she is not happy with you probably she thinks you are cheating on her. Just keep quiet and avoid exchanging words with each other as she may attack you with anything around her because she is totally angry.

2) Don't stay close to any sharp objects : Avoid going close to where something like bottles, knife, etc because she may likely raise it and hit you at that moment. Steer clear from where all types of sharp objects are in order to be at a safer side.

3) Call your close friend : If it is possible to call your close friend to settle the dispute amicably, please kindly do that in order for the problem not to escalate.

4) Leave the house : This is very important if you have called your close friend but she doesn't want to listen. Why can't you just follow that your friend to his house at that moment pending when her mind will calm down then come back?

5)Avoid cheating in relationship : Well, there is no smoke without fire, I think before your partner will accuse you of cheating on her, she may have monitored or discovered that you are into another lady which is painful. So, avoid cheating of any kind but if you are tired of her, why can't you save each other the stress of quarreling everyday and separate for sometime in order for you not to be by your partner.
