Parent Throws Their 11-Year-Old Boy Out For Witchcraft

According to a Facebook user, Chris Inyang, has shared the story of a 4-year old who has on several occasions been thrown out by his mother and stepfather who claims that he is a wizard.

Chris wrote;

LET THIS TRUE STORY TOUCH YOU.
EMMANUEL is an 11year old boy who lives in my neighborhood at 28b yellow duke street Calabar south. He is homeless. He has been thrown out of the house by his step father and biological mother. He is branded a witch/wizard. He has been sleeping on the streets for onwards to 4months now. He has been intimidated to confess he is a witch . The worse case scenario is that they still find him worthy to send on errands but deny him access into the house to sleep. The mother sneaks food to him but comfortably abandon him in the cold street at night and sleep with her husband. He has no shoes but he is always sent in the morning to drop the little sister who is the daughter of his step father in school and also go and bring her back. He does that barefooted while the sister has shoes . The stigma of branding him a witch does not allow people assist him. Please people of God ,can someone somewhere assist me to help take this innocent lad off the streets and get the parents to take full responsibilities of his upkeep. Forget LIBYA....LETS START HERE. He will sleep outside again tonite.

This is just sad.

Rapped Libya Returnees Pregnant

Some of the female victims, who were recently evacuated from Libya, are said to be pregnant after being raped by their captors while in detention in Libya, just as some Nigerians still in Libya are said to have spurned efforts to bring them back to Nigeria.

A member of the Edo States Task Force on Libya Returnees, Comrade Solomon Okoduwa, informed Sunday Tribune at the weekend that the victims were subjected to dehumanising experience by their captors. He disclosed that about  560 Nigerians are expected to be repatriated into the country from Libya this week.

According to him, the expected Libya returnees consist of two groups of about 280 people each.

He gave the expected date for the arrival of the Nigerians as Tuesday, December 5, 2017.

Edo State has the highest number of Nigerians, who are being repatriated from Libya, with indigenes of the state consisting about 70 per cent of the returnees.

He stated that about 780 Libya returnees, who were indigenes of Edo State, had been brought to the state upon their arrival at the Murtala Muhammed Airport in Lagos.

He said that the state government was solely responsible for the rehabilitation and training of the Libya returnees, calling on local and international organisation to assist the  government in rehabilitating the Libya returnees.

He said:
Apart from taking care of the returnees from the moment they land in Lagos, Edo State government pays children returnees N10,000; adults get N20, 000, while pregnant women get N25,000  each within the first three months of their arrival.

“We also provide accommodation, medicare, training and other important needs while they are with us".

Arsenal 1 - 3 Man United: Manchester United End Arsenal's Run Of 12 Home League Wins

Manchester United ruthlessly punished defensive errors to become the first side to win a league game at Arsenal since January in one of the games of the season so far.

Jose Mourinho's side were reduced to 10-men late on when Paul Pogba was sent off for a dangerous tackle and they were aided by a stunning goalkeeping display by David De Gea
throughout.

But they did telling damage early on when Antonio Valencia pounced on a loose Laurent Koscielny pass to drill the opener, before Jesse Lingard side-footed a second after robbing shokdran Mustafi to link smartly with Romelu Lukaku and Anthony Martial.

The strikes meant United had scored as many goals in 11 minutes as they had in eight away fixtures against the Premier league's so-called 'big six' clubs.

But an end-to-end first-half, which delivered 20 shots on goal, saw Arsenal hit the woodwork through Alexandre Lacazette and Granit Xhaka during a frenetic goalmouth scramble, before
De Gea denied Hector Bellerin, Sead Koasinac, and spectacularly prevented a Lukaku own goal.

The Spaniard could do nothing about Lacazette's simple finish on 48 minutes but after Lingard had hit the post in a breathless start to the second half, De Gea produced an
unbelievable double save from Lacazette and Alexis Sanchez.

His heroics maintained the advantage during an opening 15 minutes to the second half which saw United have just 26% of possession, but Lingard was on hand to tap in a third on 63
minutes after good work by Pogba.

Pogba's dismissal arrived when he mistimed a tackle to effectively stamp on the back of Bellerin's leg, and the Frenchman will now miss the Manchester derby next Sunday.

But his moment of woe felt merely a footnote in riveting encounter which moved second-placed United to within five points of their city rivals.

India To Set 3 Years Kail Term For Muslim Men Who Practic Instant Divorce

India is all set to criminalise triple talaq, a practice of instant divorce common among the country’s minority Muslims, with a three-year jail term.
Officials said the Indian government was likely to bring in a legislation in the winter session of Parliament, which would not only make triple talaq illegal and void, but also entail a jail term of three years for the Muslim husband.

“Under the draft law, triple talaq in any form — spoken, written or by electronic means like email or SMSes will be illegal. Besides, giving instant talaq will be a non-bailable and cognizable offense,” a senior official said Saturday.

“The idea is to empower Muslim women and save them and their children. The law, if passed by the Parliament, will be a deterrent for Muslim men to divorce their wives simply,” he added.

The draft law has been prepared by an inter-ministerial group, headed by Home Minister Rajnath Singh.

Though Talaq-e-biddat (instant divorce) has no mention in Sharia Islamic law or the Koran, the practice has existed for decades that allows a man to divorce his wife just by uttering the word “talaq” thrice.

Floyd Mayweather Sues Ex-Girl Friend Shantel Jackson For Stealing

Retired boxer, Floyd Mayweather, has filed a lawsuit against his former fiancee, Shantel Jackson, for stealing piles of cash and using his credit cards to go on shopping sprees.

In a court document obtained by TMZ Sports, the boxing champion claims that Jackson who is currently dating hip-hop artist Nelly, stole the cash from him and used his credit cards without permission to go on shopping sprees.

It was also reported that the boxing champ recently found out about it, through a mutual friend.

Read TMZ report below.

Floyd Mayweather's ex-girlfriend, Shantel Jackson, used his credit cards on the sly and helped herself to his piles of cash ... according to the lawsuit he just filed against her.

According to docs, obtained by TMZ Sports, Shantel got access to Floyd's credit card accounts, and scooped cash around his house, to go on personal shopping sprees. He claims she shipped all her illicit booty to a secret location to keep him in the dark.

Floyd claims Shantel would praise him in public when he got bad press purely to gain his confidence. In the docs, his lawyer writes ...

"As a result of that confidence, Mayweather, who's education ended at eighth grade, did not audit or otherwise inspect either his cash or his credit card statements for theft by Jackson."

(NOTE: Floyd's reps tell us his lawyer has it wrong ... he left school in the 12th grade, not 8th.)

Translation: She pulled a rope-a-dope, and yeah ... Floyd was the dope.

According to the suit, Floyd only found out when a mutual friend told him Shantel had been bragging about her financial exploits.

The champ's suing his ex for theft -- no specific amount. Shantel is still suing him, too ... for a slew of reasons, including domestic abuse and invasion of privacy.

Buhari Arrives Jordan For Counter-Terrorism Summit

President Muhammadu Buhari has arrived Aqaba, Jordan for a summit of Heads of State to review strategies in fighting terrorism.

The summit, tagged, `Aqaba Retreat’, to be hosted by His Majesty, King Abdullah II of Jordan, would also look at ways of reinforcing joint security structures that would be more proactive in preventing attacks.

The News Agency of Nigeria reports that the President’s aircraft landed at the King Hussein International Airport, Aqaba, at about 8.15 pm local time.

The President was received at the airport by Jordanian government officials, the Minister of Defence, Brig.-Gen. Mansur Dan-Ali (retd.), National Security Adviser, Maj.-Gen. Babagana Monguno (retd.), and the acting Director-General of the National Intelligence Agency,  Mohammed Dauda.

Others at the airport to welcome the President were the Nigerian Ambassador to Jordan, Haruna Ungogo, and other Nigerian embassy officials in Jordan.

West African Heads of State, including the Presidents of Ghana, Guinea, Mali, Niger and Togo as well as the representatives of governments of 48 countries will be attending the meeting.

A number of key non-governmental organisations are also expected to participate in the meeting, slated for December 2 and 3.

The President’s Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Mr. Femi Adesina, had on November 29, in a statement issued in Abuja, said President Buhari would share Nigeria’s experience on terrorism and its spread across West Africa during the meeting.

According to Adesina, this is with a view to soliciting more support for pre-emptive measures that will neutralise the activities of insurgents in the sub-region.

NAN reports that Buhari may speak on the recently inaugurated Nigeria’s Policy Framework and National Action Plan for preventing and countering violent extremism.

The security document is believed to be tailored toward addressing the conditions conducive for the spread of terrorism, while countering the dangerous ideologies that fuel terrorism.

President Buhari had on August 24, signed a presidential directive for the implementation of the policy framework and national action plan for preventing and countering violent extremism.

Those on the President’s entourage to Aqaba were the governors of Kogi, Osun and Niger as well as the Ministers of Defence, Foreign Affairs; the National Security Adviser, and the Acting Director-General of the National Intelligence Agency.

Fellow Nigerians Abducted, Sold Us Into Slavery In Libya - Returnees

In the midst of the uproar over revelations that Libyan nationals are buying and selling migrants as slaves in Libya, we learnt that Nigerians based in the country also sell their fellow countrymen.

This emerged as more Nigerians are repatriated by the International Organisation for Migration with the backing of the European Union in an ongoing exercise that has seen 1,295 retrieved from Libya in November alone.

Since the beginning of 2017, IOM-facilitated repatriation has brought back 5,578 Nigerian migrants, who were trapped in and outside prisons across Libya.

On Thursday night, 150 migrants from mostly Edo and Delta states arrived the country aboard a Buraq Airplane at the cargo terminal of the Murtala International Airport, Lagos. It was two days after 239 migrants had also been brought into the country.

Many of the returnees, who were thankful for being back, confirmed to Saturday PUNCH that they were sold by their fellow countrymen, who were getting rich in Libya.

One of them, 26-year-old Odion Saliu, a hairdresser from Edo State, said she was kidnapped and handed over to a Nigerian, who forced her to call her mother.

According to her, her mother in Benin paid N200, 000 but she was again sold by the same Nigerian for 3,000 dinars (about N794, 000).

Saliu explained that the Nigerians spoke Pidgin English and some Nigerian languages.

She said, “When I was kidnapped with others and held for some weeks, the Arabs asked if I wanted to be taken to a Nigerian and I readily said yes. I was very happy that I was going to someone from my country. But it was a lie.

“The Nigerian they took me to locked me in a cell and told me to call my mother and ask for N60, 000. The man said he would sell me to a connection house if my family did not get the money. I called to inform my mother and the trafficker who facilitated my journey from Nigeria.

“But the trafficker spoke with them on the phone and told them the amount they demanded was too small. They increased it to N200, 000. My mother paid into an account after they provided her with the account number over the phone.

“The Nigerian said if I wanted to cross the sea, I had to pay him again. But when we got to the seaside, he sold me again.”

Another Edo State indigene, Sunday Anyaegbunam, left Nigeria along with his wife in April.

He said during their nine-day journey through the desert, they were sold twice by Nigerians.

According to him, when their Nigerian “burger” (trafficker) sold them to another set of Libyan traffickers at Agadez, Niger, the traffickers sold him and his wife to a Nigerian who took them to Sabha, Libya, where they were separated in different cells.

“We were made to contact our families on the phone and I had to ensure the payment of N400, 000 for my release and N300, 000 for my wife,” Anyaegbunam said.

Like others, he could only identify the Nigerians trading in their countrymen in Libya through the Nigerian languages they spoke and their accent.

He said, “The Nigerians selling people in Libya are more wicked than many of the Arabs. I have never seen people so heartless as the Nigerians who bought and sold me.

“There are many of them in Agadez and Sabha, who are making so much money from selling their own people. But there are other West Africans doing the business too.

“When you approach them and say, ‘Please, my brother, help me.’ They would tell you, “No brother in the jungle.”

A 25-year-old woman, Esosa Osas, who was in Libya for six months, said she also met many Nigerians selling their countrymen.

“You dare not talk to them, else they would beat you and lock you up. They sell women for 5,000 dinars and men for N4, 000 dinars. I noticed that the connection houses were also controlled by Nigerian women.”

All these accounts were corroborated by 35-year-old Harrison Okotie who lived in Libya for three years until his repatriation.

“Nigerians and Libyans are doing the business like they are one big happy family,” he said.

Most of the migrants who arrived Nigeria on Thursday were from Edo State.

Officials of the state’s task force on illegal migration were on hand with luxurious buses to transport their people back home.

A member of the task force, Mr. Okoduwa Solomon, told Saturday PUNCH that his team had made six such journeys to the airport within the last one month to take their indigenes repatriated from Libya back home.

He said, “The first process is to take them through counselling, then we profile them.

“After that, we put them in a home that the state government has provided for the returnees. The Edo State Government is paying each of the returnees from the state a stipend.

They are going to undergo a training in agriculture, poultry, fishery and others to make them useful to themselves and the system.”

Officials of the National Emergency Management Agency coordinate the reception of the returnees at the airport.South West Zonal Coordinator of the agency, Mr. Yakubu Sulaiman, said the returnees would be lodged in a hotel where they would have the chance to clean up before their journey back home.

Meanwhile, President, Women Arise and Centre for Change, Dr. Joe Okei-Odumakin, has called on the Federal Government to use all diplomatic channels to prevail on the Libyan authorities to ensure the dignity of our people.

She said in a statement on Friday that it was an embarrassment that Nigerians who were treated like royalty in the past were being dehumanised in a foreign land.

“We must build a country where our people have opportunities to prosper and lead useful and productive lives and will only travel on leisure and business and not as illegal migrants desperate to live anywhere other than Nigeria,” she said.

Over 400,000 Nigerians, others still stranded in Libya –AU Commission

Meanwhile, Head, African Union Commission, Moussa Faki Mahamat, has said that over 400,000 Nigerians and others remain stranded in Libya.

Hundreds of thousands more — “400,000 to 700, 000,” according to  Mahamat — remain stranded.

European and African leaders have set themselves a tall order to stamp out horrific abuse of African migrants, some of them are Nigerians in Libya, where thousands are suffering in a vast, lawless territory.

On Thursday, a summit of the African Union and the European Union set a goal of immediately repatriating 3,800 migrants languishing in a camp near Tripoli.

But experts pointed to a daunting array of hurdles, from extracting migrants in perilous situations to giving them incentives to stay put when they return home.

Even so, the summit’s commitment, initiated by outrage over a CNN television report on black Africans being sold as slaves in Libya, is being welcomed.

“It is a step in the right direction,” International Organisation for Migration Europe Director,  Eugenio Ambrosi,  told Agence France Presse by phone from Brussels.

“It is a little bit too much to think it will solve the slavery issue, but it would definitely mitigate (it) to some extent,” Ambrosi said.

He said the summit also showed there was now “international watchdog pressure” that could be brought to bear on the criminal gangs, but it must be “sustained.”

The drive was announced at a meeting on the summit sidelines organised by French President, Emmanuel Macron.

It brought together eight other EU and African countries as well as the AU, EU and United Nations representatives.

Macron said the UN-backed Libyan government of Prime Minister Fayez al-Sarraj had identified and granted access to the worst camps to enable the returns of people who want to go home.

The Macron group also decided to work with a task force, involving the sharing of police and intelligence services, to “dismantle the networks and their financing and detain traffickers,” he said.

They pledged to freeze the assets of identified traffickers. The AU is expected to set up an investigative panel and the UN could take cases before the International Court of Justice.

Libya calls for campaign against human trafficking

The Libyan government has condemned the reported auction of West Africans in its capital Tripoli, noting that the criminal practice was not part of the culture of the Libyan people.

It called for an international campaign against illegal migration and demanded an end to “exploitation, the suffering of the ambitious African man looking for better life in Europe and human trafficking right from the country of source.”

Speaking on the alleged auction of West Africans in his country at a press conference on Friday in Abuja, the Charge d’Affairs and ambassador-designate, Libyan embassy in Nigeria, Dr. Attia Alkhoder, explained that his government had ordered the relevant agency to carry out a comprehensive investigation into the incident.

He said the government was concerned about illegal migration and human trafficking, adding that Libya needed technical and logistical support to control its southern border, which is the major route for illegal migration across the Mediterranean Sea.

The diplomat criticised the media for attacking and holding his country responsible for the slaves’ auction, noting that human trafficking and the reported slaves’ auction were done by individuals and not the Libyan authorities.

Alkhoder said, “Libya renews its call to put an end to exploitation, the suffering of the ambitious African man looking for better life in Europe and human trafficking.

“Libya calls for an international campaign to put an end to this phenomenon by providing security and border control to end the Libyan crisis, unify its government institutions and end the transition system that contributed a lot in the weakening control of territory.”

The envoy noted that solving illegal migration was a collective responsibility involving countries of origin, transit and destination.

He added that Libya spent a lot of money accommodating immigrants and facilitating their voluntary return to their countries, insisting that curbing illegal migration needed serious coordination of international efforts.

Returnees get N100m, 150 hectares of land for farming

Governor Godwin Obaseki of Edo State has approved a seed capital of N100m and 150 hectares of land for 150 victims of human trafficking, who recently completed skills acquisition training in the state.

Obaseki announced this on Friday during the graduation of the participants of the programme, which was organised by the Edo Agricultural Development Programme in Benin City, the state capital.

He also directed the Ministry of Agriculture and Natural Resources to immediately liaise with the relevant authorities towards securing the land for the returnees to commence their agricultural businesses.

According to the governor, the beneficiaries would be put under the supervision of the Benin-Owena River Basin Authority and the EADP.

Obaseki stressed the need for coordinated efforts to end modern slavery.

He stated that the International Day for the Abolition of Slavery, marked on December 2 annually by the United Nations, should be seen as a day for deep reflection on how to bring the illicit trade to an end.

Obaseki said, “We ordinarily should not be talking about the menace of slavery given the experience we have had. But it is a reality today and we have no choice but to tackle it.

“However, it is pertinent to point out the fact that modern-day slavery, in its various forms, such as forced labour, debt bondage, and human trafficking, has no place among us.

To effectively abolish slave trade as we have it today, it takes a coordinated, deep-reaching, international coalition that will take into cognisance the various forms of modern-day slavery and compel perpetrators to back down.”

He, however, commended the returnees, comprising 51 trained on crop production, 15 on agro-processing, 68 on livestock farming and 52 on fish farming, for participating in the programme.

He also urged them to be ambassadors in the state-wide campaign against human trafficking and illegal migration.

Earlier, the Programme Manager of the EADP, Mr. Peter Aikhuomobhogbe, commended the state government for initiating the training and expressed optimism that the trainees would put the skills acquired to good use.

The couple were arrested after taking the little boy, who is younger than four months old, to hospital with a rash on his face.

UBA Emerges First Nigerian Bank To Win African Bank Of The Year Award

Pan-African financial institution, United Bank for Africa (UBA) Plc, has once again proven its leadership on the continent, as The Banker magazine has crowned the bank ‘African Bank of the Year 2017’.

The award was a first for Nigeria as it marked the first time a Nigerian-headquartered bank will beat other contenders to the prestigious and highly coveted regional award.

To further demonstrate the group’s strength and dominance in the financial sector on the continent, four of UBA group’s operations in Africa also led contenders in their respective countries to emerge the ‘Best Bank of the Year 2017’ in their respective markets.

A statement from the bank Thursday said UBA Congo, UBA Tchad, UBA Gabon and UBA Senegal emerged the Best Bank of the Year in Congo, Tchad, Gabon and Senegal, reinforcing the strong franchise of the group across its chosen markets in Africa.

UBA Gabon and UBA Senegal won the same awards in 2016, as both subsidiaries of the UBA Group remained the banks to beat in the respective countries, the statement added.

A publication of the London-based Financial Times newspaper, The Banker magazine, is a global financial intelligence magazine that provides global bank ratings/analysis and is the definitive reference in international banking for high level decision makers globally.

According to the magazine, the aim of the award “is to highlight industry-wide excellence within the global banking community. The winner is selected from participating banks in each of the 120 countries from which entries are received for the competition”.

Explaining the rationale behind UBA carting multiple categories in its December issue, The Banker magazine noted that Africa’s economic landscape has been unpredictable in recent times, resulting in recessions in some of Africa’s best performing economies while the region as a whole only expanded by about 1.3 per cent in 2016.

“In these conditions only the most diversified and innovative of regional banks can prosper. And this is precisely why the United Bank for Africa (UBA) has scooped the 2017 regional winner award.
“For one, the lender registered impressive top- and bottom-line growth over the review period,” it noted.

The magazine went further to enumerate the various achievements recorded by UBA Group during the period, noting that earnings for the year reached N384 billion ($1.07 billion), signalling a 22 per cent growth from its 2015 performance while profit before tax also grew by 32 per cent, to reach N91 billion.

According to the organisers, “Equally impressive was UBA’s capital adequacy ratio which at the end of 2016 stood at 20 per cent while its non-performing loan ratio was a healthy 3.9 per cent. Operating across 19 markets in Africa, the bank serves more than 14 million customers.”

It added that the pan-African bank’s foray into various ventures in Africa also helped to clinch its activities in the year under consideration, stating: “Beyond the numbers, the bank has won and acted on a number of headline deals. These include financing a new stadium in Douala, Cameroon for the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations for $285 million.
“In Senegal, more than $250 million of trade finance was provided to the state oil company while the lender acted as arranger and bank agent in the raising of $160 million to finance road infrastructure.

“The bank’s digital tax collection solutions are also helping regional governments in Senegal and Burkina Faso.”
The organisers observed that UBA also made impressive strides in the digital space, adding that in terms of internet banking, the organisation processed seven million transactions valued at more than N600 billion in 2016.

Mobile banking processed transactions valued at N70 billion over the same period. UBA also launched eMailMoni, a service that lets customers transfer funds via e-mail, while Chat Banking allows clients to perform basic transactions through social media platforms.
“For these reasons and others, UBA is the winner of our 2017 African Bank of the Year award,” the magazine stated.

According to the statement, the Group Managing Director/CEO of UBA Plc, Mr. Kennedy Uzoka, who was delighted by the recognition from The Banker, said: “These awards mark another milestone for the UBA Group and are a testament of the diligent execution of the bank’s strategic initiatives on customer service.

“Being recognised as Africa’s best bank complements positive feedback from customers and is a recognition of our improving efficiencies, service quality and innovation. I therefore dedicate it to our growing loyal corporate and retail customers, who are our essence.

“Given our heritage commitment to Africa’s development, we continue to impact lives through our service as well as funding to individuals, businesses and government.”
Uzoka added: “The bank remains focused on its goal of democratising banking in Africa, leveraging on new technologies and our rich pool of talent.

“It is satisfying that our efforts towards leadership are yielding great results. We continue to gain market share across our chosen markets, as we deepen financial inclusion, meeting basic and complex financial service needs of the growing African population.
“We are Africans and determined to change the narrative of financial services in Africa and this is just the beginning.”

On his part, Mr. Emeke Iweriebor, Regional CEO, UBA Francophone Africa, described the awards as exciting, stating that the bank’s great work in Africa was increasingly being recognised.
Iweriebor, who dedicated the awards to the bank’s esteemed customers, said: “Our pioneering innovations in the African banking sector are undoubtedly critical to the growth and development of the continent.
“Africa’s banking sector has come a long way but we still have a lot to do. We at UBA Group are dedicated to being a critical part of this transformation.”

He added that the bank will continue to leverage its local knowledge, global exposure as well as presence to drive positive change in Africa, working actively with the government, local businesses, regulators and other stakeholders in deepening financial services.
The Banker awards “Bank of the Year Awards” are widely regarded as the Oscars of the banking industry. For 90 years, The Banker has been the world’s leading monthly journal of record for the banking industry.

UBA was incorporated in Nigeria as a limited liability company after taking over the assets of the British and French Bank Limited, which had been operating in Nigeria since 1949.

Ikoyi Cash Haul: Bank Claims Ownership Of Flat 7B

Union Bank of Nigeria Plc has claimed ownership of Flat 7B in Osborne Towers, Ikoyi, where large sums of money were found.

The sums found in the flat, which were forfeited to the Federal Government on June 6, are $43,449,947 (about N13billion), N23, 218,000 and £27,800 (about N10.6milion).

In its pending application, the bank is praying the Federal High Court in Lagos to vacate an interim order forfeiting the flat to the Federal Government.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) had accused former National Intelligence Agency (NIA) Director-General Ayodele Oke of fraudulently converting the agency’s funds. It alleged that Oke’s wife, Folasade, used part of the funds to buy the flat.

The court, on November 9, ordered the flat’s temporary forfeiture to the Federal Government.

Justice Saliu Saidu ruled that it would be permanently forfeited if no one turned up to justify its ownership within 14 days.

Yesterday, Union Bank’s lawyer Chief Ajibola Aribisala (SAN) said he filed an application seeking to vacate the interim forfeiture order.

In a supporting affidavit, the bank said the flat was part of 16, Osborne Road, Ikoyi, belonging to Alhaji Ahmadu Adamu Muazu.

It said the property was covered by a certificate of occupancy dated September 27, 2009 and registered as 97/97/2009 in the Lands Registry Office, Alausa.

According to the bank, Muazu mortgaged the property to it by virtue of a Tripartite Deed of Legal Mortgage dated November 1, 2011.

Union Bank said the property was a security for a loan granted to Tripple A Properties & Investment Ltd.

The bank claimed that the property’s original titled deed had been vested in it (the bank).

Besides, it said the loan was yet to be liquidated despite its tenor expiring.

The bank claimed that it sold the property to Chobe Ventures Ltd to liquidate the loan.

EFCC, in its counter affidavit, argued that the bank lacked the locus standi to challenge the forfeiture.

While arguing the application for the flat’s forfeiture, EFCC’s lawyer said Mrs Oke made cash payment of $1,658,000 in tranches of $700,000, $650,000 and $353,700, for the flat’s purchase between August 25 and September 3, 2015.

In a supporting affidavit deposed to by an investigating officer, Mr Musa Giwa, the agency said Mrs Oke gave the cash to a bureau de change operator, Alhaji Shehu Usman Anka, to pay for the flat.

“The funds used to acquire the property sought to be forfeited in the name of Chobe Ventures belong to the Federal Government of Nigeria but was fraudulently converted to the use of Chobe Ventures. It is in the interest of justice to grant this application,” the EFCC said

EFCC said when it recovered the huge cash from the flat on April 12, it also recovered several documents indicating that the flat belonged to Chobe Ventures, including invoices and cash receipts issued to the company.

It claimed to have written the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC) for the particulars of Chobe Ventures’ directors, following which the CAC affirmed that the directors of Chobe Ventures were Mrs Folade Oke and Mr Ayodele Oke Jr.

Justice Saidu adjourned till January 12 for the hearing of Union Bank’s application as an interested party.
